

Warren E. McCubrey, 90, known to many as "Mac", died peacefully October 10, 2012 at Springbrook Nursing Facility with his wife June by his side. He was born in Portland, July 31, 1922 at the St. Barnabus Hospital the third of son of Raymond S. and Margaret I. (Knight) McCubrey. Warren grew up in the Woodford's area of Portland, where he graduated from Deering High School. He worked in the So. Portland Shipyard welding Liberty Ships and then was proud to have served his country in the US Coast Guard during WWII in the Philippines.
Following his discharge from the Coast Guard, Warren attended and graduated from the Maine Vocational Technical Institute. Mr. McCubrey was a past president of the Penguin Ski Club where he met his wife June E. Layton and was married in 1950. He worked mostly in a parts department position at Marster's Chevrolet, Woodward and Austin Chevrolet, Jackson Chevrolet and Forest City Chevrolet until his retirement. Warren enjoyed helping others along with bowling, skiing, stock car racing, participating in organizations, and spending time at Sebago Lake with his family. Along the way, he also coached farm league baseball.
Following his retirement, Warren became a Red Sox fan and watched as many games as he could and sometimes watched reruns hoping for a better outcome. He also took on woodworking as a hobby where he liked to make toys and musical wall animals that he gave to children, family, friends and would donate to church fairs.
He was a member of the DeMolay in his younger years. Warren was proud to have been a Mason, receiving the honorary 33rd degree. He was a member and past master of Deering Lodge #183 and held many positions in various masonic organizations which included Scottish Rite, York Rite and a member of Kora Temple Shrine. Warren was a past commander of Ralph D. Caldwell American Legion Post, serving as bugle player for the Caldwell Woodsmen Drum and Bugle Corps and also became a member of the Falmouth American Legion Post. He served as a Cubmaster and was a district commisioner for the Boy Scouts of America.. During the 1950's and 1960's he served as a Civil Defense and Public Safety Volunteer. Warren was a member of the Woodfords Congregational Church where he served as a deacon and usher for many years.
He was predeceased by his brother, Vernon McCubrey and his sister, Marjorie Evdo.
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, June Evangeline (Layton) McCubrey, a brother, Arthur McCubrey of Standish, a son, David W. McCubrey of Hollis, 3 grandchildren, granddaughter Heather McCubrey, grandson Kelsey McCubrey, granddaughter Kayla McCormick all of Hollis, and 4 great grandchildren who were the light of his life the past few years, Rick, Kirsten, William and Jaise.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5-8 PM at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland were Officers of Deering Lodge # 183 will conduct ritualistic services at 7:30 PM. Graveside services with Rev. Carolyn Lambert officiating, will be held Friday at 11 am at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland. Military honors will follow.
