William G. Seidel “Opa”, 86, of Portland, passed away on November 30, 2011 with his family by his side. The son of Dr. John C. and Mable (Foster) Seidel, he was born in Portland at Queen’s Hospital. A lifelong resident of Portland, he attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, and graduated from Cheverus High School, and the Gorham State Teacher’s College. After graduation he was a special education teacher at Pineland. Bill was also an Army Veteran serving as an M.P. on a hospital ship in the Pacific during WWII. On July 4, 1959 he married Edeltraud Korner of Germany. A devout Catholic, he was a long-time member of the Third Order Secular of St. Francis of Assisi. Throughout his life he enjoyed spending time with his family, doing presentations at gatherings, telling jokes and stories, singing old songs, and being a magician for his grandchildren, all with a great sense of humor, kindness, and a smile that would light up a room. He will be lovingly and sadly missed by all. His family would like to thank the Maine Veteran’s Home in Scarborough, Units A and C for taking such good care of their dad through the years. Bill was predeceased by his brothers Dr. Charles T. Seidel, and Dr. Robert E. Seidel. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edeltraud, his four children William E. Seidel of Saco, Lorraine S. Gibson and her husband Paul of Gorham, Gerald C. Seidel of Portland, and Maria Dhanke and her husband Michael of Plaistow N.H., five grandchildren Anne-Marie, Christine, William, Julie and Jeremy, four great-grandchildren Dylan, Nicholas, Alan, and Anthony, a brother Dr. John H. Seidel of Scarborough, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and relatives in Germany. Services are under the care of Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, December 5, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church 1342 Congress St. Portland, interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery 1461 Broadway S.
