Albert Calvin Hammond was born in Freedom, Nebraska to parents Albert and Iva (Barnett) Hammond on June 15, 1924. In the mid 1930s, his young family packed up their belongings and headed West to begin a new chapter in their lives. The family found a new home in NW Oregon and first settled in Scappoose. Albert was one of ten siblings. He was younger brother to Elvin and he was older brother to Neal, Twila, Joyce, Beverly, Donna Jean, Dean, Iva Ruth, and Richard. Albert attended and graduated from Scappoose High School in 1943.
Following graduation, during WWII, Albert joined the US Navy and served in combat on a PT boat in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
After the conclusion of his service in the war, Albert returned to Oregon and spent the rest of his days as a resident of Washington County. He served a brief time in the logging industry and he decided that career path was not for him. Albert went on to a long career as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service. He retired as a letter carrier in 1984 after a 30+ years of faithful service. Albert lived a long and experience-robust life. It has been said that his retirement period was longer than his time employed.
Albert was wed to Julia Ann Gerking in August of 1947. The two just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary of August of 2017!
Albert and Julia were blessed with two sons, Gerald and Robert.
In their younger years, the two loved to go out together dancing. Later, Albert and Julia were active golfers and long-time members of Orenco Woods Golf Club. Albert was an involved member of Hillsboro Elks. Albert loved to be outside tending to his yard and garden. He was passionate about his “green, green grass.”
Albert will be remembered by his family and all who really knew him as a truly sweet and gentle man.
