Albert Richard Hanson peacefully passed away early Monday morning August 10th, 2020 at the age of 85.
Al truly was a devoted husband, loving father and humble servant of the Church.
Al was born on August 24th, 1934 on the Big Island in Milan, Illinois, with his twin sister Helen. He grew up in Rock Island, Illinois and graduated from Rock Island High School in 1952.
He is preceded in death by his father Clarence Oscar Hanson, his mother Bertha Helen (Griggs) Hanson and his sister Helen Ruth Shepherd.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marilyn Jean (Venell) Hanson; his brother Larry Hanson and his wife, Sally; his four children Mark Hanson (wife – Katherine), Lori Casteel (husband – Rob), Sara Hanson and Leanne Gallagher (husband John); his nine grand children: Andrew Hanson (wife – Jackie), Eric Hanson, Amanda (Casteel) Sinner (husband – Randy), Robert Casteel, Eli Casteel (wife – Kirin), Kristen Daschofsky (husband – Ashley), Dani Gallagher, Luke Gallagher and Alexa Gallagher; and four great-grandchildren: Abigail Hanson, Jackson Sinner, Khloe Fredericksen and Brody Daschofsky.
Al graduated from Augustana College in Rock Island in Accounting and went on to work In Chicago before being relocated to Portland, Oregon in 1962. His career also took him to Virginia Beach Virginia twice, Mission Viejo, California and Garland, Texas, where he rose from accountant to Treasurer of Sequoia Supply. He retired to Mission Viejo and later moved to Spokane Washington before finally coming back to Portland in 2015.
He loved sports, particularly baseball and basketball. He played baseball all through college at Augustana and semi-pro ball in Portland. He also coached the Sunset American Legion baseball team. He refereed basketball at the high school level.
Al was always active in the Lutheran Church. He served as treasurer in four synods at the various places he lived. He also served in many leadership roles within his home congregations.
Al also served on the board of directors at Emmanuel Hospital in Portland and on for his Homeowners Association in Spokane.
Thanks to all the many caregivers that have helped Dad and Mom over the past few years particularly those at the Ackerly and with Bristol Hospice.
