Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, Uncle and Friend passed from this life surrounded by his family in the home he shared with his wife. He was preceded in death by his son, Dale on September 22, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothea (Dotty); daughters Bunny (Ted) Everest; Jan (Jim) Stotler; and Fran Lowe. Al is also survived by his brother George - age 99. His memory will be cherished by a daughter-in-law, four granddaughters, a grandson and seven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Al served in the Coast Guard during WWII from September 1942 until March 1946 serving on both the USS Ogden and USS Mintaka. He was stationed in the South Pacific for a portion of his tour of duty. In 1943 on shore leave in New York City he met his wife, Dotty on a blind date. He returned to his ship and active duty, was honorably discharged, and went back to Oregon only to return to New York approximately 3 years later to continue their relationship. They were married on May 4, 1947, later driving across the United States to Oregon to settle and start a family. Al worked at Pacific Meat Co. for 33 years until it closed, after which he went to work for the David Douglas School District. His main love was his wife and family along with their dog, Tucker. He enjoyed going to garage sales, hawk shops and trips to the Oregon Coast. For decades he traveled with his wife and daughters to Reno, Nevada where he loved to play poker. He became a member of the Gateway Elks and played poker regularly on both Tuesday and Friday nights with a new group of friends. Playing pool was another important part of his life. He was on a pool team with both his son-in-law and grandson for many years, playing until age 89 making many friends along the way. Al will be remembered for his kind and gentle heart and by the way he found joy in all aspects of his life. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Portland Chapter of the American Cancer Society, the Oregon Humane Society, or a charity of your choice.
