Alfred Alexander Kuhn

Alfred Alexander Kuhn was born on August 29, 1928 in Portland, Oregon. He attended Highland School (now MLK Middle School) and Rigler School during his elementary years and graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School in 1946. Following High School he desired to learn a trade. His father purchased a shoe repair business on West Burnside and he and his father worked as partners in Kuhn’s Shoe Service for 21 years. He served in the US Naval Reserves from 1948-1953.

Al’s family was part of the Volga German community and attended the German Congregational church. This is where he met the love of his life, Verna Eckhardt. They were married on November 20, 1949 and enjoyed 74 years of marriage until her death in 2023.

The shoe repair business was sold when his father retired, and Alfred was then employed with Pacific Northwest Bell for 17 years in the motor vehicles department, retiring supervisor in 1986. He had a perfect attendance record at work for all of those years.

Alfred and Verna enjoyed traveling in their retirement years camping in their RV, taking several trips to Hawaii, cruises with friends and a tour of Europe.

Al’s devotion to the Lord Jesus began when he accepted Christ as an 8-year-old boy at a neighborhood Vacation Bible School and continued for his entire life. He regularly spent time reading God’s word and praying for family and friends. Through the years, Al attended and served at Southwood Park Evangelical Free Church, Central Bible Church and in more recent years Gateway (Baptist) Church.

Al was a loving father, grand-father and great-grandfather. His first great-great grandchild was born just days after he passed on to heaven. He is survived by his three children, Patti (Stan) Birman, Nancy (Gordy) Whipps, Dave (Karen) Kuhn and (including spouses) 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Al will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Gateway Church, 13300 N.E. San Rafael in Portland.
