November 10, 1942 – June 28, 2025
Alice Mary (Bernhard) Peiler passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. She is survived by her children—KarenBeth, Jennifer, and John—and her beloved grandchildren: Caitlin, Megan, Jacoby, and Brady.
Born in Long Island City, New York, on November 10, 1942, Alice’s life was a tapestry of intellect, creativity, and strength. She spent her early years on Long Island, graduating from Plainedge High School in 1961 before pursuing a degree at Adelphi University, where she majored in English and was a proud member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Upon graduation, Alice took great pleasure in working for a time as a children’s librarian.
After moving to Walnut Creek, California, in 1974, Alice juggled raising children with attending night school at University of San Francisco School of Law, earning her JD in 1980. She went on to build a distinguished 25-year career practicing civil litigation, including medical malpractice. Her work was marked by compassion, diligence, and a fierce sense of justice.
Her home of 50 years in Walnut Creek—lovingly remodeled and featuring a state-of-the-art craft room—stood as a testament to her creativity and determination. It was in this cherished space that she crafted countless handmade cards, stitched intricate cross-stitch pieces, and curated her beloved collections of classical music and Vogue Ginny Dolls—some of which were replicas of those she had as a child. Alice was also an avid reader and hosted many book club dinners in her beautiful home.
In her final year, Alice moved to Portland, Oregon. Though her time there was brief, it was filled with the comfort of family and the peace of knowing she was deeply loved.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Alice’s honor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause close to her heart.
A Celebration of Life will be held in October 2025 in the Bay Area. Details will be shared at a later date.
