Allen “Bud” Smock was born on July 6th, 1929, to parents Archie L. Smock and Olive M. Smock (Duncan) in Portland, Oregon, where he continued to live and create community for the duration of his life. Bud married Betty J. Smock (Rickard), the love of his life, whom he referred to as “Tweedy” and they went on to raise two daughters, Linda and Donna. Bud enjoyed a long and successful career with Priestly Oil, working his way from gas attendant to general manager of the petroleum and industrial chemical distribution division.
He was generous with his time and active in his community as a volunteer, including as a Multnomah County Sheriff Deputy Reserve Officer, Red Cross blood delivery driver and blood donator, Charter member of the Kiwanis Coliseum Club, Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp volunteer, co-founder of Rose Cup Car Races, and Babe Ruth Baseball coach. Bud’s garage is lined with certificates and awards from multiple agencies for his service in and around Portland.
Bud’s active, full life was enriched by numerous hobbies, including running and daily calisthenics, swimming, clamming, deep sea fishing, pinball, nightly spite and malice card games with Betty during cocktail hour, and extensive national and international travel. As he became less physically active, he found a new love in watching NASCAR and football. He stayed on top of current events by reading the newspaper and watching the news every day and enjoyed National Geographic magazine. Bud and Betty also enjoyed time with family and friends at their condos in Gearhart and Sunriver.
A life-long Portlander, Bud spent the final two years of his life in Vancouver and Camas, Washington, to be closer to family. Bud passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 24th, 2021, at Edelweiss Adult Care Home in Vancouver, Washington, of natural causes at the age of 91.
