Alonzo J. Lopez died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, in Portland at 86. He was born Jan. 24, 1929, to Jose and Fabiana (Rodriguez) Lopez in Rio Grande City, Texas. He graduated from St. Mary's University in 1952 with a degree in business and an ROTC commission as an officer in the U.S. Army. He was sent immediately to an artillery unit in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1956, the same year he married Eileen O'Neill. The couple lived in Tacoma, Medford and finally Portland in 1967, where he worked for New York Life Insurance and then the U.S. Postal Service until he retired in 1992. He was a longtime parishioner at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church (The Madeleine) and CYO coach.
He is survived by his wife; children, Theresa, Timothy, Anna Maria, Mary Eileen (Jeff), Cecilia (Richard), Christopher, Patty (Greg) and Mary Catherine; brother, Gabriel; and eight grandchildren. A rosary was recited at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at The Madeleine Church.
