Alvin Richard Rierson

April 21, 1924July 18, 2020

Alvin Richard Rierson, Jr, a Miramont Pointe resident, in Clackamas, Oregon passed away peacefully from cancer, surrounded by family on July 18, 2020. Born in McMinnville, Oregon on April 21, 1924, Alvin was the oldest son to Alvin Sr. and Edna Rierson. He had 3 siblings: Joyce, Phyllis and Robert. He is remembered by his one remaining loving sibling, Phyllis, for his compassion, kindness and care of her as she grew up. He was a wonderful brother in her eyes. He taught her to ride a bike, ski, swim and just tackle life with courage.

Alvin was a small-town boy, raised in Amity, Oregon, but then moved with his family to Medford, then to the Portland area. He graduated from Gresham High. He joined the Navy at 18 in the middle of WW II and served in San Diego in communications.

Alvin was a skilled carpenter whowas proud that he retired with all 10 of his fingers! He could build a house from foundation to the finish work. He eventually was hired by the Portland School District in the maintenance department. The district appreciated his numerous skills and talents. Even after retiring, he would visualize and line up jobs in his head, as a mental exercise.

At Miramont Alvin enjoyed his weekly Bible Studies, choirs and playing the organ. He enjoyed being connected to technology. He was instrumental in starting a Wi-Bowling League at Miramont, which continues as a favorite activity for residents. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, camping, RVing, building, dancing, music and decorating for Christmas.

Alvin was preceded in death by his three wives: Helen Jean Ives, Winifred Boileau and Janet Howland. Alvin will be greatly missed by his 5 devoted children: Debra (and Darryl) Rond, Jennifer (and Don) Benson, Andrew Rierson, Susan Rierson and Julie (and Ena) Rierson and step-daughter, Kari (and Sam) Howland. He was well-loved by his grandchildren because he was just a big kid himself who understood their interests: Adam Benson, Christopher (and Annie) Benson, Frances (and Chris) Rond, Thomas Rond, Jesse Rond, Luke (and Amber) Rond, Danielle Rond, Cara Board, Amelia Board, Ethan Board, Aidan Rierson, Emmett Rierson, Ashley (and Chris) Luna and Allyson Miller. He also had 8 great grandchildren.

He is also remembered by his lovely sister-in-law, Karen Rierson, and his sweet nieces Teresa (and David Resk), Karen (and Jerry) Snow, Cathy (and Ray) Reisig, Jennifer Wallingford and Sarah Bailey. Because of Covid-19 there will only be a Memorial Service at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in the name of Alvin Rierson can be made to Milwaukie Lutheran Church, 3810 Lake Road, Milwaukie, OR 97222 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
