

Arthur Hardy Martin was born in Seattle, Washington to George Edward Martin and Flora Belle Martin (Hardy). He was the eldest of three sons. His brothers were Bruce Allan Martin and Wallis George Martin. All three boys were Eagle Scouts.
Arthur attended Lincoln High School and graduated from the University of Washington in 1953 with a degree in education and a commission in the U S Air Force. Arthur obtained a Masters Degree in Education Administration from Oregon State University in 1963. While at the University of Washington he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi, Alpha Phi Omega, The Oval Club and was elected first Vice President of the Student Body (ASUW).
Arthur enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1947 and served as a Comsat photographer. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an aerial photographer and observer with the 12th Air Force in Europe. In the active reserve he served as a Squadron Commander and Assistant Deputy Wing Commander. Upon completion of thirty years with the U. S. Air Force Reserve he joined the Oregon National Guard Reserve (SDF) and served as Assistant G-3, G-1, Commander of Special Troops, and Chief of Staff. He completed sixty- two years of service to his country and retired as a Colonel.
In August 1953 he married his college sweetheart, Priscilla Jean Prickett. They were married almost 60 years. Art and Priscilla had three children, a son Geoffrey Norman Martin and twin daughters Melissa Priscilla Martin and Melinda Catherine Martin Pond (Gerald). Art also leaves three grandchildren, Matthew Pond, Mary Elizabeth (Darrell), and John, great grandchildren Terry, Cecilia, Brylee, and Addyson.
In civilian life Arthur taught school in Aberdeen, Seattle, and Vancouver, Washington. He joined The Portland Public Schools in 1959. He served as a teacher and Vice Principal at Irvington, and Principal at Markham Primary, John Ball, Kenton, and Joseph Meek Elementary Schools. Arthur was active in many civic organizations: The Oregon Military Museum, Peninsula Optimists, Portland Elementary Principals Association (PIAC), Air Force Association, Navy League, Portland Police Internal Investigation Audit Committee, Portland Rose Festiva Fleet Committee, Portland Association for Sea Services, State Guard Association ( SAGUS) , Oregon National Guard Association, Military Officers Association, and as State President of the Department of Oregon Reserve Officers Association. For 30 years he and his wife Priscilla hosted U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and Royal Canadian ships during the Rose Festival.
Arthur was a member, Deacon, and Elder at Central, Rose City Park, and Calvary Presbyterian Churches.
Arthur was pre-deceased by his parents, brothers Bruce and Wallis, and his beloved wife, Priscilla.
