Audrey Gilda Krebs Bates was born on February 17, 1927, in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia. Her parents were Clifford Pantalion Krebs and Hilda Maud Krebs, and a brother, Bryan Ashley Krebs, all of whom preceded her in death. After high school and with the war on, Audrey chose to go to work at the Army Aircorp base, Amberly Field, near Ipswich. It was there that she met her future husband, American soldier William Hall Bates. Bill and Audrey were married at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Ipswich before Bill had to go back to the States. A few months later, Audrey was able to board a “war-bride ship” with many other woman who had married American soldiers.
Once in the United States, Bill took Audrey to live in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he went to work for Clinton Motors; but a year later, they moved to Bill’s family home (“The Ranch”) in White Salmon, Washington. Audrey’s children were all born while they lived in White Salmon--Barbara Lee Bates Jenkins (husband, David); Nancy Electra Bates (partner, Ghaz Zardinejad); and William Hall, Jr., (wife, Kate)--before moving to Portland, Oregon. Audrey leaves seven grandchildren—Stacy Jenkins Hergenhan (John), Heather Jenkins Wolf (Jason), Erika Wassom Pfeifer (Craig), Lindsay Bates Lundberg (Brannen), Cameron Feightner (Carly), Hilary Bates Doherty (Neil), and Alexander Bates (Courtney)—and eleven great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held for Audrey on Sunday, July 1, at 1 pm at Skyline Memorial Gardens, where she will be buried next to her husband, Bill, and her mother, Hilda.
