Dr. Benjamin Vergon Smith Jr.

Dr. Benjamin Vergon Smith, Jr., born November 25, 1932 in

Angola, Indiana-passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on

Saturday, July 30, 2022, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland,

Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin Vergon Smith

and Marilla Hope Charles.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Karen Hoffman Smith;his

daughter, Elizabeth Hope Squire (David Squire);and his son,

Benjamin V. Smith, 111. He was the proud grandfather of seven

grandchildren, Colton, Eliana, Hope, Caroline and Cooper Squire

of Portland, OR. and Jackson and Calleigh Smith of Elmhurst, IL.

He is, also, survived by his only sister, Patricia Hope Balmer.

He graduated from Portsmouth High School, The Lawrenceville

School, Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. He

served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corp in Korea. He

was a board certified surgeon practicing General and Thoracic

surgery in Spartanburg, SC for 2 years and then he moved to

Sewickley, PA where he raised his children and practiced for 25

years. He was on the medical staff at Sewickley Valley Hospital

and was a member of their Board of Trustees. After Ben's

retirement Ben and Karen moved to Hilton Head Island, SC.

Ben loved to travel with his family. He enjoyed tennis, golf,

bridge, poker and watching his favorite football team-the

Pittsburgh Steelers.

He will be remembered for his strong faith and service to God

and his greatest joy was his family and beloved grandchildren. We

celebrate his spirit of embracing life to its fullest and grateful

for all the lives he touched while traveling this Earth.

Cremation arrangements were made by Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary

and Memorial Park in Portland. OR. A celebration of life service

will be held on Hilton Head at a later date.
