

Bertha Walter passed away quietly on January 7, 2012 in Portland. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Philipp Walter, and their five children: Lydia Jensen (Denmark), Rosemarie Brackett (Seattle) , Trudy Carlson (Salem) , Karl Walter (Estacada) and Heidi Schweitzer (Portland), 18 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bertha has no living sister or brother.
Bertha was born in Strembeni, Besserabien. During WW II, she and her family fled to Stuttgart, Germany after which she, her husband Philipp, and three older children migrated to the United States in search of a better life and opportunities for the family. The family traveled on the M.S. Samuel Taylor in 1951. Their first residence in America was Mason, Texas, where they worked for their sponsor, Daniel Jordan, on his ranch. After one year they moved to Kerville, Texas, where Karl Walter was born, and from there traveled across the United States to Portland, Oregon where Heidi (Walter) Schweitzer was born. Bertha and Philipp Walter and members of the family have lived in Portland since 1953.
