Bert was born November 7, 1922 in Mercer, North Dakota to Frederich and Caroline Vogele. He was the fourth of their nine children and was raised with his brothers and sisters in North Dakota and Wellington, Colorado.
In 1943 from Oregon, Bert volunteered for the Marines. He achieved the rank of Corporal. He spent 2 1/2 years serving in Hawaii as a carpenter. While in Hawaii, he got certified in metallic arc welding.
After honorably serving his country, Bert returned to Colorado where he met the love of his life, Georgia Elaine Harris while she was working at Mary's Drive-In. In 1949 Bert moved back to Portland because there were more job opportunities and to attend refrigeration school. Georgia followed in May to make plans for their wedding. Bert and Georgia were married June 12, 1949 at Zion Lutheran Church in Portland. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage and were blessed with five children and four grandchildren.
Bert worked at Sturm Elevator for many years. In the early years of their marriage, Bert often traveled out of town to install elevators. Later he worked in the shop building and constructing elevators.
Bert was an avid gardener and food connoisseur. He enjoyed sharing the produce he grew and the great sausage, wine, and spicy dill pickles he made. He enjoyed being outdoors digging for clams, fishing, hunting, and woodworking.
Bert and Georgia were active and dedicated long-time members of Saint Timothy Lutheran Church. Bert had a servant's heart and spent many hours volunteering his time and talents in service to the church.
Bert's giving nature, and his kindness and thoughtfulness of others is what will serve as his legacy. He will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor, strong work ethic, and many life-long friendships.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Georgia; sister: Emma VanMetre; sons: Bert David Vogele, Ben Vogele and Michael Vogele; daughters: Noreen (Terry) Potts and Carrie Vogele; grandchildren: Paul and Rachel Timmons, Jeremiah Vogele and Jessica Atkinson; as well as many nieces and nephews.
