Bertrand Edward Shafer, Jr., longtime resident of Portland OR, died on April 21 at the age of 99. Bert earned a BA in Psychology from Fenn College in Cleveland OH in 1942, entered the Navy, then married Cecile (nee Corvington) soon after. He proudly served in WWII (Pacific theater), earning his silver wings as an aviator before settling into the Los Angeles area with his young family. His career in Personnel for the Veter-ans Administration spanned more than 25 years. He was a canoe enthusiast who also enjoyed tinkering in his garage workshop and hitting the links with his buddies. In 1967 he married Gertrude (nee Richardson). Survivors include three daughters, Mary Wong Mizroch (Steve), Pat Falkner (Avery), and Dorothy Corona (Joe), grandchildren Lori Cook, Kim Judy and Derek Wong, and great-granddaughter Olivia Rose Wong, all residing in California. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marie G. Shafer, son, Richard Edward, wife, Gertrude, son-in-law Donald Wong, and grandsons Jason and Stefan Wong.
