Born on August 5, 1930, in Forest, Mississippi, she married Albert Townsend at the age of 20. He was stationed at the San Diego Naval Base, where they established their home and raised their two children, Kathi and Janeice. In 1978, she moved to Hermiston, Oregon, and later relocated to Salem in 2001, where she resided for many years. For the last 16 years of her life, she lived in Portland, Oregon, to be close to her family.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church in every community where she lived. She expressed her faith by teaching Sunday school, participating in women’s groups, and serving as a Deaconess for many years. One of her favorite Bible verses was Psalm 23, which she was able to recite until the very end of her life.
Education and children held a special place in Bobbie’s heart. In 1974 she earned a degree in Early Childhood Education from Grossmont College in El Cajon, CA, and dedicated many years to teaching preschool. She nurtured and inspired countless young children in both San Diego, CA and Hermiston, OR, where she was known for her patience, kindness, and genuine love of learning. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on the children and families whose lives she touched.
Those who knew Bobbie will remember her unwavering love for her family, her quiet strength,
and the compassion she showed to everyone she met. Her greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her children, Kathi (Dennis) Sullivan and Janeice (Sean) Gray; and her cherished grandchildren, Karissa (Brian)Kuns, Dennis Sullivan, Mandy (Toby) Conklin, Julie Gray, Patrick Harry, Joshua Gray, Phillip Harry, Jaimie Gray, and Paige (Shawn) Tagalicud; and 12 great-grandchildren. Each of them carries forward the love, strength, and values that Bobbie instilled throughout her life. She was preceded in death by Albert Townsend, Reuben Gettmann and Robert Moore.
A Celebration of Life honoring Bobbie will be held in the summer of 2027. The family requests
that memorial donations be made to St Judes Children’s Research Hospital In Bobbie’s
memory, supporting its mission to advance treatments and cures for childhood illnesses.
Her legacy lives on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
