Catherine Christine Kleps-Vanderwall, known fondly as Cathy, peacefully passed away surrounded by family and friends on March 2nd, 2025, at the age of 76. She was born on June 18th, 1948, to Jack and Genevieve Tempelton, in Fort Riley, Kansas, and later moved to Gresham, Oregon, where she was raised within her large, loving extended family. Cathy enjoyed childhood days playing with her cousins and spending summers picking berries.
She graduated from Madison High School in 1966 and later pursued various careers. Cathy was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. As an adult, she returned to school and earned a bachelor’s degree from Portland State University. This academic achievement led her to her true calling as an educator. Cathy became an instructor at Portland Community College, where she taught adult basic education for students working toward their GED. She was passionate about her work and built lasting relationships with her students, many of whom went on to earn their college degrees.
A devout member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Cathy regularly volunteered in both the church and school. After her retirement, she continued to devote herself to tutoring children four days a week, dedicating countless hours to their education and well-being. She cherished her students, maintaining relationships with many even long after they had graduated.
Cathy is survived by her husband, Thomas R. Vanderwall, her son, Mark Kleps, and many others who loved her dearly and considered her family.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 22nd, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 25 N Rosa Parks Way, Portland, OR 97217. A celebration of life reception will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Cathy’s name, as a way to continue her legacy of supporting education.
