Charlie was born on April 8, 1951, in Portland, Or., and was the only child of Sid and Virginia Cleveland.
Charlie was raised in Hillsboro and graduated in 1969 from Hillsboro High School. He was paralyzed in a car accident at 18 years old, and after his rehab time at R.I.O., he was asked to mentor new patients, and he met Joyce, a student nurse. They married in 1971 and celebrated 50 years of marriage last November. They raised two sons and lived in Hillsboro.
Charlie went on to graduate in Education at Portland State and then received his Master's Degree from Lewis and Clark University. He was a beloved teacher for over 30 years with the Hillsboro School District and touched the lives of thousands of children. Fondly called Mr. C, he taught at Brown Jr. High and HilHi, both his alma maters. He taught Social Studies and led Model United Nations. He also coached soccer, basketball, track, diving, lacrosse, and rugby. When Charlie retired, he filled his time with friends and family and loved living up on his Helvetia property. He was an avid fan of Oregon Duck Football and Portland Timbers Soccer and a season ticketholder to both. He loved to travel, play with his grandchildren, read, debate, visit with their lifelong friends from their time in the "Active 20-30 Club," play poker, and was a permanent member of the HilHi Class of 1969 Reunion Committee.
Charlie lived a full and wonderful life. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and sons Justin (Cassidi) and CJ (Amy). His grandchildren Cole and Audrey (CJ), and Alyah, Maddox, Quinn, and Anthony (Justin).
A private family graveside service will be held. On Sunday, September 4, 2022, "A Celebration of Life Well Lived" has been arranged.
