Charlotte G. Meeks was born in Tacoma, WA., to Pansy Benton-Hundley and Charles (Casey) Hundley toward the end of WWI. She attended Shattuck Grade School in SW Portland and Girls Polytechnic High School. She displayed musical talent at a young age, performing a duet "Ireland Must Be Heaven" for a school program. Her mother and mentor was a devout born-again Christian, instilling those values in her daughters and those around her not by preaching but by a living example.
While still in high school Charlotte met Irvin Meeks in 1934, through her close friend, May Scott (Richardson). Charlotte and Irv were married in 1937 with May as her bridesmaid. She knew the value of thriftiness, as she was part of the Greatest Generation, having gone through the depression. Irv and Charlotte built a little house on S.E. 68th St. and then Irv was called into the service in 1943. She said she grew up fast during that time, keeping up the home and two girls during his absence.
The highlight of her life was 1948, where she recommitted her life to Christ at a Billy Graham Revival Meeting. She and Irv had two more daughters and were active in the Tremont Evangelical Church for many years. Charlotte taught Sunday School, served in the nursery and sang in the choir. Later in her life she had a telephone ministry keeping contact and praying for her friends as well as families needs.
In 1985 Charlotte lost her husband Irv, of 48 years. She is survived by her four daughters, Karen Jessup (Spouse, Dave), Sharon Rios (Spouse, Mario), Cathie Engen (Spouse, Phil) and Charlene Williams (Spouse, Randy); 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Charlotte passed away on September 28, 2010. Services will be held on Saturday, October 9, 2010, 11:00 AM at Central Church of the Nazarene, 9715 S.E. Powell Blvd. Portland, OR 97266. Arrangements under the direction of Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Portland, OR. 503-292-6611
