Born March 6, 1925 to George Walter and Helen Gertrude Spady, Clarence was one of five brothers: Frank, George (Walt), Orville (Dale), and Harold. Raised on dairy farms in and around the Sauvie Island area. Clarence joined the US Navy at the age of seventeen and served in the Pacific during WWII; four of his brothers also served at this time (Harold was too young). During his time in the Navy he spent most of his time in the Pacific, and although he did not run into any of his brothers he did see his cousin Mervill M. Mead, who had always been a close friend. Clarence got out of the Navy when he was 21 years old and married Rose Adele Katterman. Four years later they had their first son, Michael Calvin Spady, when Clarence was 25. Four years later, Steven Daniel Spady was born. During the early part of his marriage to Rose he worked for Shaver Tug Company, and later went to work for Western Transportations Company, which was owned by Crown-Zellerbach. He lived in Cedar Mills and Hillsboro, and in the 1980s moved to Clatskanie, OR. After Rose died he lived with his second wife Lila in Columbia City, OR, and later they moved to Longview, WA.
