He loved to remember the players and work warriors behind the scenes doing the sets, costuming, lighting when he was involved in the theatre at The Performing Arts Center in Newport, Oregon. He enthusiastically followed the career of many youngster players who went on to work professionally in the theatre.
Dan's favorite idol was Jacques Cousteau. Even though childhood-onset diabetes robbed him of service in the Coast Guard he harbored a deep love of the sea and its many mysteries. Cousteau piqued his imagination many times over the years and I have lots and lots of models of the Calypso in our basement art alcove to prove it.
Dan's favorite place was Newport. His favorite pet was Munchkin and his favorite person was everybody he ever met. I consider myself the luckiest woman breathing for having Dan Buckout in my life. My darling Dan danced. And he taught me to dance. We shared nine glorious years dancing.
Even after death Dan was lifting boats. Pacific Tissue and Lions Vision Bank sent a lovely medallion acknowledging his whole body donor gift. Daniel Buckout will help living folks needing skin, tissue and bone to rebuild broken bodies and his eyes will help researchers and students understand more fully the impact of Type 1 Diabetes on the retina.
Dan would smile to imagine all of the loved ones and treasured friends /players reading this homage to his extraordinary life. He would remind us that, yes, boats may be safest in the harbor, but that is NOT what boats are built for.
Daniel Ryan Buckout, age 69, of Newport, Oregon passed away on Tuesday, July 28, 2020. Daniel was born April 22, 1951 of Reinie and Gertie Buckout, Salem, Oregon. Dan is survived by his wife, Ane McIntyre and children Ryan Christopher, Kyle James, Anne Elizabeth(Collins) and Sean Patrick Buckout.
Dan died July 28th from pneumonia despite St. Vincent's hospital Cardiac ICU's herculean efforts over a ten-day period treating cardiogenic shock. Dan's stent was successful and he was recovering until the chest infection which was listed as the primary cause of death.
Dan was a lifelong volunteer and served at the Oregon Coast Aquarium, The Seaside Spay and Neuter Thrift Store and most recently accepted a position at The Burrows House local history museum and research library as tour guide here in Newport, just 1 block from his own front door. COVID raised its ugly head one week before Dan's first shift and Burrows House remains shuttered today.
Dan was especially active in community theater as a member of Porthole Players in Newport, where he most notably directed Man of La Mancha.
Dan and Ane made the big move from Gearhart to Newport in August 2019 after nine glorious years. They were settling into Dan's "Happy Place" in Newport as a retired couple in their dream home smack dab between the ocean and the bay. Love endures and abides.
Memorial Services will be held August 29, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at the Visual Arts Center, 777 NE Beach Drive, Newport, OR.
