Daniel “Dan” Richard Hinojos

For many years, Dan believed he had been born in Billings—the nearest large town—but his beginnings were actually in the small Montana community of Hysham. Although his family later moved to Los Angeles, California, where he grew up, Montana always remained somewhere in his heart. Throughout his life, he often spoke of returning there.

Dan was the eldest of four brothers. He shared his childhood with David, Richard, and Gary and was especially close to David, who was near him in age. The two brothers spent much of their time together and undoubtedly found their share of adventures—and perhaps a little mischief—along the way. Their father taught the boys how to box so they would always be able to take care of themselves.

Dan graduated from Cantwell Catholic High School in Montebello, California. He enjoyed school, had a curious mind, and possessed a lifelong love of learning. After attending college, he became a software engineer and built a career in the emerging world of computers and technology—work well suited to his intelligence, curiosity, and ability to solve problems.

Dan also served in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne, an important chapter of his life and one of the experiences of which he was proud.

In the early 1970s, Dan packed up his young family and moved to Oregon. Portland became his longtime home beginning in the late 1980s, and he deeply loved living in the Pacific Northwest. Its rivers, forests, and open spaces gave him countless opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Dan was an outdoorsman at heart. He loved hunting, fishing, paddling, exercising, and setting off on a new adventure. He was competitive, resourceful, and good with his hands—a natural handyman who could fix nearly anything. He also enjoyed cooking and was an enthusiastic sports fan. No team held a more special place in his loyalties than the Green Bay Packers.

Fun-loving and stubborn in equal measure, Dan enjoyed joking around and telling stories. His tales could be so colorful that listeners were not always entirely certain where the truth ended and Dan’s imagination began. That uncertainty was part of the fun. He liked to keep people entertained and was almost always willing to try something new.

Dan never lost his interest in technology. In later years, his Amazon Alexa became a favorite companion. He regularly called upon it to play music, answer his questions, set reminders, and provide the latest weather report. It was a fitting tool for a man who loved both computers and learning—and who always wanted to know what was happening around him.

Two of the most important moments of Dan’s life were the births of his children, Eileen and Greg. During their early years, he took tremendous pride in them. His family later grew to include his grandchildren, Taylor, Jason, and Gregory.

Since 1993, Dan shared his life with his devoted partner and companion, Mary Egan. Mary stood faithfully beside him and cared for him with love and dedication throughout his later years.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Salvador and Florence, his son Greg and his brother David. He is survived by his partner, Mary Egan; his daughter Eileen; his grandchildren, Taylor, Jason, and Gregory; his brothers, Richard and Gary; and the extended family and friends who will remember his stories, his humor, his determination, and his adventurous spirit.

Born and raised in the Catholic faith, Dan lived a life filled with curiosity, competition, laughter, hard work, and adventure. He will be remembered as a proud father and grandfather, a loyal companion, an outdoorsman, a storyteller, a problem-solver, and a man who was always game for whatever adventure might come next.

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 12:00 pm, a Memorial Service will be held at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, in the Skyline Chapel, at 4101 NW Skyline BLVD., Portland, Oregon 97229.

A Graveside Service with Army Military Honors will follow immediately after the Memorial Service, at Skyline Memorial Gardens Cemetery, at 1:00 pm.

A Catered Reception will take place in the Skyline Reception Room, following the Graveside Serivce.
