Born in Bethesda, Maryland, to a military family, Dave spent his early years traveling the world. He was a devoted son to Ross and Mary Conklin and a loving brother to Mary, Nancy, and Richard. His early exposure to different cultures no doubt fueled his curiosity and lifelong love of learning—qualities that ultimately led him to earn a Ph.D. from Oregon State University as part of a career as a dedicated scholar and thinker.
For 30 wonderful years, Dave was married to Carol Sweeney (née Haggard), sharing a life filled with books, conversation, and a deep appreciation for animals, the outdoors, and the joy of reading. He was a proud stepfather to Annette, Sonia, and Mike Sweeney, and father-in-law to Marissa Sweeney.
Dave spent many years running, not just for exercise, but for the sheer joy of movement and the camaraderie of his close-knit group of running friends. Their long-standing Tuesday night tradition of pizza and beer was as much a part of his routine as the miles he logged. In later years, he traded running for walking, but never lost his love for fresh air and the outdoors. The only thing that rivaled his passion for the outdoors was his love of books. A voracious reader to the very end, he had three books by his side in what was supposed to be a one night stay in the hospital.
Above all else, Dave cherished getting to be a grandfather to his six beloved grandchildren: Cooper, Kennedy, Pearl, Ada, Rose, and Hadley - they were the true lights of his life, and nothing brought him more joy than spending time with them.
Dave’s legacy is one of intellectual curiosity, strong friendships, and deep love for his family. He lived fully, thought deeply, and never backed down from a good discussion. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered—perhaps with a good book in hand and a cold beer raised in his honor.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held on Saturday April 19, 2025, 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the library of Parkrose Middle School located at 11800 NE Shaver St, Portland Oregon 97220. In lieu of flowers, please consider raising a glass, reading a great book, or taking a long walk in his memory.
