David D. Farley passed away peacefully in his Salem home on Saturday, February 7th, 2026, surrounded by his three children and his wife. He leaves behind a legacy defined by kindness, dedication, humor, love for the outdoors, and an unwavering devotion to the people he cherished most.
David was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1940 to Eugene and Sarah Farley. In 1954 the family moved to Beaverton, Oregon where Eugene and Sarah raised their four children, David, Susan, Jim, and Darryl. Eugene and Sarah would live in the same house for the remainder of their lives. David attended school in the Raleigh Hills area and graduated from Beaverton High School in 1958. He lettered in skiing and told his kids stories of him and his friends jumping over the Timberline Lodge pool on their skis in his youth.
David’s love of fishing and hunting started at an early age. When he was 9, he started spending the summer at his Uncle Henry’s house in Northern California where he learned how to fish and hunt squirrels. He would also spend time in a rustic cabin his Dad had bought up on Mt. Hood, without electricity. He would pack his bag and spend the day fishing, on his own, returning at dusk, at the age of 9 or 10.
In 1963, David married Catherine Turk and had three children, Carolyn, Erin, and John. During much of this time the family lived in a Beaverton, Oregon, on Wellington St. Each of the kids has fond memories of the expansive back yard with swing-set and ample supply of dirt clods, the large birch tree in the front yard, and of the red Volkswagen bus with Coca-Cola window shades that the family would take camping.
In 1977, David married Cynthia Adevai and gained 2 stepchildren, Tracy and Troy Adevai. They lived in the Cedar Hills area of Portland. During this time, David became a white-water rafting guide, taking groups down the Snake, Rogue and Deschutes Rivers. He also started his own successful printing company, Farley Printing, which he owned and operated for 22 years.
Although David had a love for deer and elk hunting for most of his life, the 1980’s introduced him to Skeet and Trap Shooting. This later evolved into a love of Sporting Clay shooting. David’s passion and talent were quickly evident. He spent much of his time at Tri-County Gun Club and Mid-Valley Sporting Clays after he moved to Salem, Oregon. He is a highly decorated and respected Sporting Clay shooter with multiple awards and acknowledgements to his name. In 2021 David was inducted into the NSCA Hall of Fame for sporting clays. He loved to teach the sport as well and was a level II instructor.
David moved to Salem in 2005 and married JoAnn Bartruff in 2013. They both enjoyed a rural lifestyle living on 2-1/2 acres where David could cultivate his love of fly-fishing, hunting, and sport shooting. JoAnn, an accomplished artist, had her art studio in the garage where she cultivated her love of art. To this day, JoAnn continues to work as a teachers aid in the Salem-Keizer school district.
During his years in Salem he was introduced to fly fishing, which soon became an obsession. His adventurous spirit combined with his love of fly fishing took him to Cuba, Seychelles, Australia and Chili, just to name a few.
David was blessed to have a large and loving family. His three children each have two children of their own, resulting in six grandkids, two great-grandkids, and a full house during their annual Summer beach trips to Arch Cape.
David Farley will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all those that knew him. Those closest to him will fondly chuckle when they remember David saying “stay out of my God damned stuff!”
A funeral service will be held at Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary, located at 6801 SW Sunset Hwy, Portland, Oregon, 97225, United States. The service is scheduled for February 27, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
