Debbie was born Feb. 14, 1950, in Brookings, S.D., to Richard Henry “Dick” Year and Mary LaVonne (Buckley) Year. The family moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1951, where she was raised, along with her two brothers and sister. Debbie graduated from O’Gorman High School, Sioux Falls, and attended South Dakota State University. In the mid-seventies, she moved to Portland, Ore. She married David Bruce MacKinnon, Dec 29, 1979. The couple resided in Portland their entire married life, where they raised their three daughters, Kathryn “Kate,” Kelsey and Kayla.
Debbie started her career in Portland at Fred Meyer stores and moved to US Bank for several years, before becoming the Director of Religious Education at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. After 25 years, she retired as Administrative Assistant for the Departments of History, Political Science and Theology at the University of Portland.
Debbie was a witty, clever and thoughtful individual. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she loved spending time with her husband, daughters, sons-in-laws and grandchildren, cooking, camping, talking, laughing and attending their countless events. She dedicated many years as a volunteer volleyball coach for her daughters, and spent several years as the VP of Softball for Interstate Little League. She loved coaching and cheering on her daughters including their many friends that became Debbie’s “surrogate” daughters. Post coaching, she continued to devote her time to her grandchildren’s various social and sporting activities even until the last few weeks of her life. Debbie’s penchant for serving her family, faith and her community are traits she has passed on to all of her daughters and will be her legacy for generations to come.
Survivors include her husband, David MacKinnon, Portland; daughters, Kate and Chris Grewell, Portland, and their children, Sophia and Riker; Kelsey and Paul Prenger, Portland, and their children, Faelynn and Flynn; and Kayla and Shawn Brink, Tigard, and their son, Noah; her siblings and their spouses, Dick Year and Sally Walters, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Peggy Year and Rob Dump, Hartington, Neb.; and Doug Year and Kristi Koppold-Spears, Des Moines, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and LaVonne Year; and her parents-in-law, Nobel Dewitt and Arlene (Chouinard) MacKinnon.
