Born on April 16, 1936, in Baker City, Oregon, Don’s life was deeply rooted in the rugged hills and open skies of Northeastern Oregon. Raised on a ranch and farm, he grew up in tune with the land—learning early the quiet strength of hard work, the importance of dependability, and the grace of the simple life.
He began his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Halfway before continuing in Baker, laying a foundation not only for a lifelong love of learning but for a steady, grounded life lived with purpose and care.
Don spent over three decades with the U.S. Forest Service, where he worked as a graphic designer. His creativity and attention to detail helped shape the way the public experienced and understood our national forests. From educational materials to interpretive signs and maps, Don’s work brought clarity, beauty, and accessibility to the wilderness he cherished. His talent wasn’t just in design—it was in storytelling, helping to bridge the gap between people and the natural world.
In 1991, Don met Kathy—a kindred spirit whose companionship became his greatest joy. Their marriage was marked by deep respect, laughter, and unwavering love.
Don was a devoted husband, a proud and loving father to Orlando Don, Donnell, Lynnell, Justin, and Jodi, and a source of steady strength for his grandchildren—Shara, Joshua, Drake, Nova, Amiya, Catriona, and Matthew, He was also blessed with many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who brought him joy and carried forward his gentle spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete M. Oliver and Violet A. Oliver, whose values helped shape the man he became.
Don will be remembered not only for his creative gifts and deep connection to the land but for the quiet way he lived—with integrity, patience, and the grace of the simple life. His presence lives on in the stories shared, the work he left behind, and the generations that carry his memory forward with love.
In honor of Don’s memory, charitable donations may be made to Meals on Wheels or the Oregon Food Bank—organizations that reflect his spirit of care and compassion for others.
A graveside for Don will be held Friday, September 5, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 4101 NW Skyline Blvd., Portland, OR 97229.
