Born in Compton, Arkansas, Don moved to Oregon in 1965, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Oregon. After completing his degree, he resided in Portland for most of his adult life. He worked for Standard Insurance for many years. Don was a writer, an avid gardener, a philosopher and poet. Dedicated to his craft, Don wrote prolifically and published in a variety of literary magazines. His writings included a number of books, including “On the Backs of Seahorses Eyes” and “This Passing World,” a novel. Don will be deeply missed by his beloved Jane Speerstra , his sister Juana Mae and brother-in-law, Larry Long, former sister-in-law, Pat Cauble, by many nieces and nephews, and by his many close friends.
