

Donald R. Givens, age 81, passed away April 25th, 2026, surrounded by family. A loving husband and father, he dedicated his life to family, career, and the study of aquatic insects (Caddisflies). He graduated from Pasco High School in 1963, joined the Naval Reserves in 1964 and served 2 years in Vietnam aboard the Destroyer "Mansfield." He attained the rank of Radarman 2nd Class.
Donald married Bonnie R. Smith in 1968 in Kennewick, WA. They attended school together at CWSC in Ellensburg, WA, where Don earned a B.S. & Master's degree in Biological Sciences. He was with the Smithsonian's Entomology Department, and later worked 30 years for the USDA, first as a Plant Protection Quarantine Officer, followed by Port Director for the Port of Portland, and was later promoted to Program Manager in Fort Collins, CO, at PPQ's Western Regional Offices. During his retirement, he continued his study of the taxonomy of Caddisflies, discovering at least 2 new species, of which one species was named after his wife in 2022.
He was a member of the Disciples of Christ 1st Christian Church. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, and bowling in leagues with his family.
Dad is survived by his wife Bonnie Givens, children: Paul and Kelly Givens, and grandchildren: Ethan Givens, Sebastian Miranda-Givens, and Summer Strom.
He was the Pillar of our Family and will be dearly missed by all.
