He graduated in 1954 from Franklin High School, enlisted in the Oregon Army National Guard, later enlisting in the United States Navy where he served as Medical Corpsman including two sea tours on the USS Bon Homme Richard. Utilizing his military laboratory technician training, as a civilian he moved to the Northwest working in the labs at Willamette Valley General, Northern State, and Western State Hospitals as a medical lab technician before becoming the Lab Director at Multicare Health System until his retirement.
Doran shared many adventures with family and friends through the years including traveling, kayaking, sailing,reading, scuba diving, back-country hiking and fishing. His family and friends enjoyed stories of his many memories and historical knowledge through the years to his last moments.
Doran’s faith was a very important part of his life which he continued to exemplify through his final days. He was active in his church and community serving as President of Ascension Lutheran Church for the last 25 years.
Doran passed on August 21, 2022, at the age of 86 at his home in Puyallup, WA surrounded by family. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Nancy; brother Jerry (Karen) Slater of Minnesota; sisters Carol (Dale) Buettner of Wisconsin, Linda (Rick) Breyette of Minnesota; children: Jane Stewart of Lakewood, WA; Dane (Lisa) Slater of Lacey, WA; Jay (Patti) Slater of De Smet, SD; Jana (Andre) Burnthon of Pahrump, NV; and Jason Slater of Fresno, CA: stepchildren Michael (Lisa) Petorak; Angela Milsten; Sarah (Gabriel) Conrad; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and numerous friends..
As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him. Psalm 18:30
