Doris June Dugas was born January 20, 1940, in Gallatin, Missouri, and passed away July 9, 2023, in Portland, Oregon at the age of 83. The first of three daughters of the late Fletcher and Lucille (Pettit) Galpin. The family moved between Missouri and California. While in Oakland, California Doris’ mother was baptized in Jesus Name and received the gift of the Holy Ghost. She had prayed for a child that would serve the Lord and play the piano in church. Lucille’s prayers and dreams would soon come to pass.
As a very young child, Doris began to display her creative qualities that would serve her and the Kingdom of God so well throughout her long and fruitful life. She developed a desire to serve the Lord and to play the piano. She would often pretend to practice the piano on their home’s windowsills. When Doris was eight years old, Lucille bought a piano at an auction and arranged for Doris to get lessons at seventy-five cents per lesson. This would prove to be a real asset throughout her life.
At the same time, Doris received her personal call and gave her life to Jesus. The Galpin’s moved back to Oakland California, where Doris received the gift of the Holy Ghost at the age of 15. Doris then went on to Western Apostolic Bible College to study and meet the love of her life, the late Phillip Dugas.
Doris started dating Phillip her Senior year at WABC, and on the evening of their graduation, Phillip proposed to her. They wed on October 15, 1960, in San Leandro, California. This began a marriage and ministry life that spanned 52 years. Evangelizing, pastoring churches, and Bible college work made theirs a fulfilled life working for the Lord. Doris was always the loyal, creative and hard-working companion to Phillip, gladly accompanying him and finding ways to complement his ministry.
Doris found many ways to use her giftings. Her organizational skills and artistic and creative abilities found her in many roles throughout her life. She worked as office manager, instructor, and yearbook editor at Christian Life College, wrote Sunday School curriculum for Word Aflame, served as church organist and pianist, newsletter designer, and decorator. She enjoyed gardening, painting and sewing but Doris consistently made going to Church and serving God her priority.
Doris had a unique way of seeing something that she wanted done, and finding a way to get it. She loved to create, design, sew and cook. She could often be found making plans for her next project. She had a warm smile and twinkle in her eye, and was an avid reader. She loved history and gardening. Each time they moved, Doris made sure to take her mother’s rose bush and enjoy its beauty and meaningful family history. She enjoyed adding touches to her home that reminded her of her early childhood years in Missouri.
With her husband Phillip, Doris enjoyed her role as an accomplished musician in the churches they pastored in Oroville, California; Ashland, Oregon; Salem, Oregon; and Portland, Oregon (Evangel United Pentecostal Church and Abundant Life United Pentecostal Church).
Throughout her life, Doris Dugas has influenced and blessed the lives of her family and countless others.
Doris was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan Mark Dugas (1962), and by a sister, Linda William (2019).
Doris leaves to cherish her loving memory her children, John Dugas and his wife Christine, Deborah Mostyn and her husband Dennis, and Andrew Dugas, as well as grandchildren, Phillip (Nancy) Dugas, Amanda (Matt) Madrid, Johnathan (Rachael) Dugas, Olivia Dugas, Johnny Dugas, Ashley (Ezra) Roberts, Macy Mostyn, and Reagan Mostyn, and great-grandchildren, David Dugas, Chloe Dugas, Josiah Madrid, Laelle Madrid, Abigail Dugas, Ethan Dugas, Elodie Roberts, and Timothy Roberts.
