After graduating high school at age 16, she enrolled at Washington State University and joined Alpha Delta Pi. She married John William (Bill) Gardiner in July 1948. They established their home in Portland, Oregon. They raised their three daughters in the Laurelhurst area.
Bill and Doris started their business Air Oil Products in the early 1960’s. They operated it together until 1994 when it was sold. Sadly, Bill passed away in 1995 which ended their plans for travel and snowbird living. Until then, she was the wind beneath his wings.
Playing bridge was a big part of their lives. The four couples of “the bridge group” made many happy memories together. Doris has now joined the other seven at the great bridge table on high.
Doris took pride in her duties as a wife, mother and grandmother, her clean home, her fine cooking and her work. She loved a good martini with two green olives. She volunteered for many years at Albertina Kerr. She was a decent golfer. She enjoyed reading, knitting and sewing.
After a long struggle with dementia, she passed away on November 8, 2024, surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Deanne (Bob) Darling, Debra Gardiner, and Denise Gardiner (partner Rick); and her grandchildren, Emily (Dustin) Foster, Jared (Marissa) Darling and Leigh (Chris) Freeman. She is also survived by her niece, Nancy Lowenberg (partner Mike); and nephew, Kenny (Debbie) Schleiger. Sadly, she will miss the arrival of her great-grandson in March 2025.
