

Doris Jean McCord was born on April 12, 1951, at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She was the first of two children to Hazel and Cleveland McCord, Sr. She attended Allen Temple C.M.E. Church. On March 17, 2024, Doris passed away peacefully in her home.
Doris attended Jefferson High School, where she graduated in 1969. Following high school, she enlisted in the United States Army. Upon returning to Oregon, she ensued a lengthy career with Portland Yellow Pages as a typesetter, where she completed various training and educational opportunities, and received numerous accolades for her outstanding service. Doris later attended Washington Business College where she earned a certification in professional bookkeeping. After 30 years of service to the Yellow Pages, she retired. Later, she rejoined the workforce and worked for ten years at Ross Department Stores.
In 1979, Doris was blessed with the most precious gift, her daughter, Heather M. Cain, whom she saw earn a bachelor's degree at Oregon State University, earn a master’s degree at Mount St. Mary's College in Los Angeles, and start her own business. Doris was a devoted mother, daughter, sister, and aunt who lived her life, realized her dreams, and fulfilled her desires.
Doris was a member of the Mt. Olive Grand Chapter of the Oregon Order of Eastern Star under the Auspice of M.W. St. Joseph Grand Lodge and the Billy Webb Elks Lodge in Portland. She not only was a skilled seamstress, but she crocheted, did macramé and needlework. She was a wiz at assembling intricate puzzles. Doris blessed family and friends with many hand-made items, the most favorite being delicious decorative themed cakes. Doris also enjoyed collecting Betty Boop and butterfly memorabilia. She had a vast collection of all the latest records in her youth and adulthood. And oh, she could dance!
Doris loved and aided her family. She lived by her mother’s words: "The strength of health renews itself through self-forgetting work and striving through unselfish service done for a worthy cause."
Doris was preceded in death by her mother, Hazel L. Cotton, father, Cleveland D. McCord, Sr., and brother, Harold D. McCord. She leaves to honor her life and memory, daughter, Heather M. Cain, sister, Melva Holmes, sister, Shirley Alexander, sister, Norma Jean Brown, brother, Cleveland McCord, Jr., (LaHoya), Sister-and-law, Barbara Hardaway McCord, many nieces, nephews, and beloved relatives and friends.
