Dorothy was born on June 2, 1931, in Everett-Snohomish, Washington. She was the daughter of Joe and Dorothy McGuinness. She had three sisters: Pat, Sally, Mary Ann and two brothers: Mike and Tony. In 1949 at age 18 Dorothy was crowned Queen of Kla-Ha-Ya Days Festival in her hometown. For this honor she was able to travel to Los Angeles and appear on a national radio program. In 1957 she married Leonard Fleischmann and settled in Tacoma, Washington. Over the course of the next ten years the family grew by three boys (Joe Fleischmann, Tom Fleischmann, and Tim Fleischmann) and a surprise baby girl (Jean Czuba).
After moving to Portland from Eugene, the Fleischmann family became members of the St. Rose Catholic Church in NE Portland in 1974. Dorothy was an active and involved member of the parish for the next 48 years. She was a member of the St. Rose Guild and Neo-Catechumens. She was also a volunteer at the Portland Society of St. Vincent de Paul, working there weekly for over 25 years. She was named “Volunteer of the Year” in 2010. Working not only in the home managing a busy family, Dorothy also worked in the cafeteria at Grant High School cooking and serving meals. After her retirement from Grant, Dorothy enjoyed traveling. She had many adventures visiting Rome, the Panama Canal, Carmen Islands, Alaska, and Red Rock National Park in Utah.
Dorothy was a talented baker. Her specialty was homemade cinnamon rolls of which many families, friends and parishioners had the pleasure of enjoying on a regular basis. Dorothy generously donated a batch of cookies each month, for a year, to the winning bidder at the St. Rose Fish Barbeque. Dorothy also loved music and singing. She passed on her talents to her daughter. She was a faithful attendee at all sporting events for all eight grandchildren: Joe Jr., Jen, Mathew, Mallory, Eddie, Laura, Sally & Nick. Christmas Eve and Easter were two of her favorite holidays. She hosted wonderful dinners with White Elephant games, acting as tiebreaker during the argument about the rules and Easter egg hunts, involving each grandchild getting a specific-colored egg to hunt and find.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 31-years, her sisters, and brothers. She leaves behind her children, Joe Fleischmann (Laura), Tom Fleischmann (Molly), Tim Fleischmann (Pamela), and Jean Czuba (John). Her eight grandchildren Joe Jr. (Katie), Jen (Ryan DeGrofft), Matt (Monique), Mallory, Eddie, Laura, Sally and Nicholas. And her five great-grandchildren Jack, Gabriel, Wesley, Ryder and Leia.
Remembrances can be made in her name to St. Vincent DePaul or St. Rose Parish.
