Raised a princess by her parents, Dave and Daisie White, Dorothy realized her dream of being a member of royalty as a princess for the 1940 Winter Rose Festival Court. One of her most memorable experiences during that time in her life was a trip to Chicago, New York, Washington DC, Miami and Havana as a member of the court and an ambassador of goodwill from Portland. Evening gowns, private tours, meeting famous stars and politicians, and seeing the sights of each city were a part of the adventure.
The best was yet to come with her marriage to Kenneth A. “Spike” Johnson and the birth of her three children, Pam, Dave, and Barb. Once the kids were in school, as a member of Riverside Golf and Country Club, Dorothy’s passion became golf and bridge with the girls. She was a gifted athlete and loved playing bridge “by the seat of her pants”.
Recently Dorothy was recognized as a Grand Dame having been a member of the “club” for over sixty years. Dorothy and Spike traveled to Europe, Mexico, several cruises plus regular trips to Hawaii.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; brother, Pat; husband, Kenneth “Spike" (1998); her granddaughter, Heidi Christine Johnson (2008); and, daughter Barbara Kay Johnson (2009). Her survivors include her daughter, Pam, and her son/grandson, Kaidyn “Spike” Johnson; son, Dave (Meg) plus their daughters, Jennifer (Jeff) and Erika (Bryan) Bayless including their children Ryan and Kevin Bell, Audrey and Evan Bayless. There was nothing more dear to Dorothy than her family.
The Johnson family would like to direct a special thank you to the staff at Maryville Nursing Home, especially the West Annex angels particularly Christina, Roshini, Amanda, Irene, Katie, Larry, Allan, Anna, Adele, Gertrude, Lynn, Ann and Kathleen.
In June 2016, Dorothy was a Rose Festival princess at Maryville Nursing Home. For two years she was overjoyed to ride on the Maryville float in the Beaverton parade…once a princess, always a princess.
In lieu of flowers, Dorothy would appreciate any amount you desire to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project. Spike was a Navy fighter pilot during World War II. Dorothy and her family have always held the men and women serving in our military with high regards. God Bless them and all of you.
Due to the recent pandemic, the Johnson family will plan a ‘Celebration of Life’ for Dorothy with all of her many friends and family members at a later date. Please stay safe and healthy. We value you more than words can express.
