Dyrk said this day felt like a little taste of heaven, he was so honored and loved by each one of them as they prayed over him and shared how much they respected and loved him. Being  in the presence of such Men of God who love you unconditionally &Theda, was a beautiful gift that friendship and oneness in Christ Jesus brings. Gifts of love and prayers are the BEST gifts. Dyrk always made everyone feel listened to and feel special.  That smile could light up the room.  He and my husband Gary were the best of friends and what I remember the most is their ability to make each other laugh and laugh sometimes to the point of tears.  I think he inherited his sense of humor from his dad and his ability to really listen and love people from his mom.  She really loved people and listened intently.  That was Dyrk, he loved people and listened to find out where people were in life so he could encourage them.  He knew so many people and easily made friends.  His cars and working on them was what he was known for and collecting car-loving friends along the way.  We are so blessed to have known Dyrk for so many years.  Our hearts are heavy knowing he is not here, but we have the hope to see him some day and know that he is healthy, happy and enjoying Heaven which is promised to every believer in Jesus.

I met Dyrk when I was 13 in the Grant High lunchroom.  We had recently moved leaving friends and in a new school.  I was sitting alone and who should come and sit across from me and introduce himself...."Hi! I'm Dyrk!  He was friendly and outgoing.  That was the beginning of our friendship.  It was 1963, freshman year and we became friends immediately and were inseparable.  After school we would walk up to his house on Beakey Street and he introduced me to the world of cars with his 1940  Ford panel truck.  He taught me to drive a stick and when I bought my first car, a Henry J, we towed it from Boring to his parents garage where we spent all of our free time, late into the night.  We had classes together and spent lots of hours over the years working on cars, laughing and joking.  His mom even called me one of her sons.  There are so many stories I could tell but not enough room here.  Graduation came and then the draft.  Dyrk served in the Army in Germany and then worked with me in my gas station. About that time he met Jamie, the love of his life and we started to see the need for more stable jobs and getting on with our lives.  With marriages and children to raise we were in our own worlds by this time.  Over the years Dyrk has remained a true and wonderful friend.  There are so many stories that I could write a book.  When I look at his picture and realize he is not here anymore, it hits like a blow to my heart.  Dyrk was a very caring person.  He was always interested in what I was doing.  Always willing to help, and he would drop whatever he was doing and was right there for me.  He was quick to forgive and no matter how bad things looked he always had a smile.  We could always lean on each other. Always teasing and laughing.  He was my best friend.  I watched him grow to the man of God that we all know.  Even though this earthly life is short, I know I will see Dyrk again because we accepted Jesus as our Savior and he promises we will live forever in Heaven.

Thank You Dyrk Sr for sending this double rainbow to us Sunday night as me, Dj, Josh, Al, Amy, Blake, Caden, Kate, Ryder, Jackson, Evy and Chase were discussing what to put on Your headstone. We had only 22 characters to use including spaces and over 30 inscriptions we wanted.  We all raised our hands at the same time and we choose

Oh babe You are The BEST at each of those titles. You are the Greatest Man we know on this earth. 

For me you are my Hero, Gentle Giant, Protector, Lover, Best Friend and best of All MY GOD fearing HUSBAND!!!! You are the BESTEST EVER you treated me better than I deserved Dyrk Sr. You were my Beautiful handsome Man with big blue eyes, heart and mind devoted to me only as your Wife. You reminded me daily how much you loved me. Oh how I knew you loved me Dyrk Sr thank you babe!!!
I cherish each gentle touch, each  thank you each good morning, each goodnight, our prayers together at each meal, our daily devotion time every night and after devotions our prayer time together.

My Uncle Dyrk was sweet, silly, goofy, loving, and kind. He had a gentle nature and a laid back attitude about life. I remember him always smiling. He treated everyone with kindness and respect. He was so very proud of his family. His wife, sons, and grandchildren were his whole world.

One of my memories about Uncle Dyrk is that he really liked my frosted Molasses cookies (Aunt Jane's recipe). I would make extra during the holidays so I could take some to him. I am thankful that I was able to bring him some last month when I came for a short visit.

Dyrk was such a great grandpa to me, he was always up to do stuff and have fun and he was determined to get things done. Me and Blake used to do go-karting one day of the week every week and one time my go kart wouldn’t start and he was determined to try to get it started. He cared about all of us more than we could ever imagine. He would always try to help out my family, asking if we needed anything. No matter if he was your dad, grandpa, uncle he was always your hero, and he will be forever missed by all of us.

Many words can not express the love and gratitude Dyrk brought to the Dunn family. A smile and a laugh will always be accompanied by the memory of Dyrk. 
May we all be so lucky to have a friend like Dyrk who brought peace, understanding and a fellow love of God to many of life’s changes. 
May Dyrk’s loving kindness and warmth descend through many generations of the Van Zanten family.

Fondly remember Dirk supporting my love of old cars. My husband was a carpenter not a mechanic. Dan made it clear if I was going to drive these old cars I had to know a great mechanic and preferably one with his own tow truck.... 62 buick, 62 Ford Fairlane, GMC Yukon, lexus rx. And more as he kept me and 4 daughters on the road. Bless you Dirk.

My Uncle Dyrk I can hear your laugh now. We never had long talks, we just laughed right away when we saw each other and a huge hug came shortly after. It was like best friends who could be at peace with each other. We had our own moments that only needed a glance to know all is good and happy. The times when our family was at the lake and I was tubing on the water as he was driving the boat. I never said slow down as I knew he would look back to see that I was safe, upright, and making the waves. I’d catch his assurance with a big smile and he knew all was good. The times when I came to visit and he and Josh were working on cars in the shop, I couldn’t wait to go see them and to hear about the things they were working on. 

My seeing our family is not often as I live out of state for many years and visits are few. My whole heart is with all my family, and I am sending all my love. Aunt Jamie, DJ and Allison, Josh and all of your sweet children please know Dyrk Loves You to The Sun Around the World and Back Times Infinity forever! 

Rest In Peace sweet Uncle and I look forward to your stories of heaven with God. We Love You Always and Forever! ~Jenny

Hard to hear the news of your passing. You taught me so much. It wasn't just fixing cars. Learning that failing isn't the end, it just means you gotta try something different. Where I spend my time and how I spend my time matters. Thank you for sharing your experience and helping me make better decisions as a young adult. The laughter we shared was some of the best medicine to get through some hard work and if you want something, you gotta earn it. You helped shape a lot of who I am today. You were like a father to me. I'm thankful for you, Josh, Jamie and DJ and how you let me be a part of your lives. Thank you for all your love and care over the years. Sure will miss you. Grateful for all the memories, love you lots. Rest in peace Dyrk.

You are truly missed  our brother Dyrk and always will be. Our hearts break and many tears flow for the loss of you. We shared so many fun times, many family get togethers,  barbecues, great food, picnics on the river after a great day of water skiing, or just boat rides up and down the rivers. Teaching the kids to swim and build castles in the sand. So much joy we had together. 
Jamie was an awesome cook and she could whip together a gourmet breakfast, lunch and dinner. 
We can taste it now. Both you and Jamie would make us all laugh and it was contagious. The Love you had for each other was remarkable. Movie nights  at your house on a Fri or Sat night were awesome. Pizza, popcorn, candy, cookies, whatever we felt like eating. Great movie nights. 
Going out to breakfast on Saturday or Sunday mornings was something we all looked forward to.
Elmers here we come🙂 Helping each other with projects was a great learning exsperience and we had fun doing them. Race weekends were fantastic, we all pitched in together to make sure Josh, DJ and Jake were all ready to hit the track. Jimmy raced for a while and he was good and great to watch, all of them were. We traveled to Spokane, Seattle, Canada and of course Portland race track. So much excitement! Ron and Jimmy were close brother buddies. They had fun together and were also serious when needed.
Dyrks love of family was something to behold. Love of God, family and work were his strengths.
Having inspirational conversations with Dyrk were so inspiring and you felt so good after the talks. Dyrk had so many remarkable ideals and he cared so much for you. We cared and loved him right back because he was an exceptional person.
We Will always remember the good times with you and your family. God loves you so very much and so do we. Until we meet again our Dear Brother Dyrk Sr.  We know you are looking down on us and that is a great feeling. Love to you always.  ❤️😘😇🙏🏻❤️

Papa was the kind of man who could have stepped out of the best movies—one of those timeless heroes whose humor, courage, kindness, and humility make him unforgettable. Papa’s story was a testament to that truth. He wasn’t a man of grand gestures or dramatic battles, but in his quiet strength, he embodied the true heroism that leaves a lasting impact. He showed us that the truest heroes are those who faithfully live out their love for Jesus and pour into the lives of others with a steady heart.

Papa loved being out on the water. I will always cherish the many summer days of "river church", hanging out on the beach, and boating out on the Columbia. Papa always spoke so fondly of his days at Lake Billy with the boys as they grew up too. Papa, I can’t wait to walk with you on sunny beaches and boat on the crystal waters of heaven and the new earth one day!

Papa's legacy in our family is immeasurable. Dyrk was like a second dad to me, and his deep care and selfless love profoundly shaped my life. Whether in life’s monumental moments or the everyday mundane, he was a constant source of kindness, humility, and strength—a loving father to me and DJ and an incredible Papa to my kids. 

Papa, I love you and already miss you so much. I'm so glad I had the privilege of knowing you and being your daughter in law. I'm so thankful that you are with Jesus and I can't wait to see you again!

A.W. Tozer once said, “The goal of every Christian should be to live in such a way that if people were to look at him, they would see Christ walking on the earth again.”

That was Papa. He was Jesus’ hands, His feet—His love made visible to everyone he encountered- at the shop, at the racetrack, in his home, at his kids' and grandkids' schools and sports events. When people looked at Papa, they saw Jesus whether they knew it or not. He lived out Christ’s selfless love in a way that made Jesus tangible—as a humble mechanic, a devoted dad and Papa, and a faithful friend.

While DJ and I have shared unforgettable experiences with Papa—racing at the 24 Hours of Daytona, visiting the test track in Sedona, attending an awards banquet in Florida, and vacationing in Hawaii—it was in the everyday moments, the mundane and ordinary of our lives, where he made his greatest impact.

In hundreds of conversations, through acts of service—helping with homework, snuggling and loving on our kids, building chicken coops, greenhouses, cars, and tables, or cleaning out the garage for the millionth time (which never seemed to stay clean)—Papa poured out love and wisdom, always pointing us to Jesus. His impact on our lives is profound, and we will miss him more than words can express.

One important memory I have...well, actually several important memories.... are that I really struggled with my anger and would talk back to my parents. Papa would come over to our house and say "Don't talk back to your parents and disobey them, Ryder".  Sometimes we would pray together and ask for Jesus' help. Then he would keep talking to me and always calm me down and make jokes.

Papa always took breaks in the summer when he was working and eat ice cream with us, especially strawberry!

One more memory was when Papa, my Dad, Caden, and I would be working and Papa would burp really loud and then he would say "Excuse me, I meant to throw up" and I would laugh so hard. He also used to pretend to speak in many different languages and had great accents even though he was speaking jibberish. He always knew how to make me laugh.

Papa I'm so looking forward to seeing you in Heaven. I can't wait for your hugs, to run together, and  build a big racetrack that all of us can race on. This isn't goodbye but it's "See ya soon!". I love you- Ryder James

Papa was a great man. I love him so much. He was funny, smart, and most important He loved and honored God.

My Dad’s legacy continues with his grandchildren. My oldest son, Caden, began following Jesus under the steady mentorship of my Dad who would show up at our house and just be with us 4-5 days a week for several years after he retired. He would have hundreds of conversations with our kids while he cleaned out our garage, built greenhouses and chicken coops, helped with homework, shared meals and worked on our cars. Selfless to help in all the mundane of our life— a steady “living out of the gospel” in our home.

I would like to share a specific story - but what I will tell you is that this story reoccurred so many times. Too many times to count. The only difference was the name of who brought their car to him. The other details were the same almost every time. 

One of the most vivid examples for me was Larry — the man that lived down at the end of our street at 137th and Division when I was just a kid. He was in and out of jail constantly. Most of the time when he came over he was drunk, needed something small fixed on his car, and always put the car repairs on a tab…that usually did not get paid. 

Larry’s car was a Datsun station wagon that should have been scrapped years before. I would watch my dad work on his car-but what I remember most vividly was what my father would do. He would have Larry hand him tools while he asked him about what was going on in his life. See: my Dad was simultaneously fixing the man’s car while he focused on and cared for the man’s heart. 

Let me say that again— as I think it needs to be said, as this is foreign to most business owners and the way they operate—  My Dad was simultaneously fixing the man’s car while he focused on and cared for the man’s heart. One a physical need (fixing the car) while the other in My Dad’s mind much more importantly was a spiritual one and My Dad knew it and my dad would focus on that every time. 

My Dad modeled Jesus …. He just did it as a mechanic instead of as a carpenter. Oh, how he loved the lost. He was forgiven much and he shared it with everyone no matter what it cost him.

Many people don't know that he was a skilled race driver, yet he was constantly focused on my driving and helping me reach my dreams and aspirations. It is one of the greatest privileges of my life to have a Dad like that. He was one of the “best men” in our wedding and he remains one of the greatest men I have ever known.

My Dad was what so many of my friends and family have said over the past few days in their own ways: Jesus with skin on. A father to many. A friend to the lonely. A protector to the hurting. A counselor to the broken. A rescuer of those in trouble. A gentle lion who fiercely protected his loved ones.  An adoring Papa to his grandkids. A lover of the unloveable. A missionary to those car lovers everywhere who would never set foot in a church building.  A “doer” of the Bible. A humble giant of a man who always made you feel like you were the most important human in the room no matter what your circumstances were.

When I was about 8 years old, we were leaving our home in Cove Palisades and driving back to Portland on a Sunday night as my parents had work the next morning there. We had made it down the road a minute or so when My Dad stopped the truck and said to our whole family, “I need to turn around! I need to share Jesus with our next door neighbor”.

You know how that is - everyone is wanting to just get on with the drive and get home. My dad was adamant and turned the truck around (by the way it was a Chevrolet Crew Cab dually with a built 454 with a 700R4 Tranny with a shift kit on Chrome 17’’ Alcoa wheels. I'm sure my Dad is smiling about those details :) 

We pulled up at the neighbor’s house and he told us boys to come in with him. I watched my Dad share his faith with this 85 year old man that was drinking a bottle of whiskey, smoking and wearing only a robe. My Dad did what he did best ….. mentored his boys in the ways of Jesus - while loving on a man that no one else loved. That man died a week later in a house fire. My Dad listened to the Holy Spirit.

When I was 11 years old, I really struggled with anger issues, and I was a very rebellious child. Honestly, I was a broken person. I was going to Sunday school, and I wasn't really paying attention, I was praying when I was told to, I was taught all of these different bible stories that I didn't really understand.  I would scream and get in quarrels all the time with my siblings and my parents. Then my Dad and my Papa took me under their wings-- every day after school as they worked on things around the property, and taught me many things, physically they taught me how to build fences, rebuild vehicles, and how to remodel houses. But spiritually they taught me about Jesus, of how to become a strong man of faith, such as how to control my anger, be kind to others, and serve others. Later on, I gave my life to Jesus, got baptized, and now I follow the Lord. I'm forever grateful for you in my life, Papa. I can't wait to drive the streets of gold in Heaven in Lo-Ride with you! My dad and I had a up and down relationship over the years not from him but from me. I had so much anger and was dealing with addiction and pain in my life. I turned from God was full of sin in my life, lost a marriage but no matter what was going on in my life he loved me. The things I said and did to my father any other father could have turned his back but just like our Heavenly Father my dad never left my side. The more I pushed away the more my dad loved me. I am so thankful for the recent years that I had with my dad. The love and the relationship he and I had in the recent years was such a blessing. He never brought up the past. Everyday was a new day. He truly showed me unconditional love. I am so grateful for my dad’s prayers for me over the years I know because of his prayers I was able to break free from addiction and be able to put my life back together. For the first time in my life I am free from the chains of addiction and one of the last things I whispered in my dad’s ear before he passed was I love you dad and I am free. I know that’s all he ever wanted for me was to be free and at peace. Thank you Dad for your unconditional love you never gave up on me, you never stopped loving me, you showed me a glimpse of what our Heavenly Father is. Thank you Dad I love you and will miss you always. But your fingerprints are all over my life. Love you always dad. Josh

I was fortunate enough to have met Dyrk when he worked on my car. He also worked on my daughter's Blazer. It was a mess. I called Dyrk and told him our problem late one evening and hoped he could find time to work on it.  He said where is it and I'll stop by and pick it up. I told him it was raining like mad, but he said he would be right over. I remember him at 9:30 at night lying in the gutter getting soaked and chaining up the Blazer.  It was a selfless act I will always remember. I doubt this is the only time he gave of himself so willingly.  God Bless him.

Dyrk my brother in law , that I’ve known for years was such a funny kind guy, and very laid back !! He loved all his cars and sure could water ski , loved his family and is going to be missed by me , Dennis LaDu

Papa was the best grandpa a grandson could ever hope to have. Whenever I was around him, I always knew I was loved beyond what I could even understand. Working with him was one of the highlights of my life. I will always remember the time me and him spent together during the summer of '23 when I visited Oregon after being away in Florida. The picture above was during that time, looking at pictures of his old cars, hearing stories about Madras and my dad and uncle as kids, and enjoying some ice cream and cookies. I wouldn't trade that time for anything, and am so grateful that God gave me that time with him, as it was not long after that he had his first stroke. I will miss him so very much, his laugh and kind voice, his willingness to do anything for me, his free advice, and just the pure joy that he had just being around me and our family. I am already looking forward to seeing him someday in heaven. I love you Papa, thank you for everything!

So sorry to hear about Dyrk,  We went to Hinson church together and hung out together lots of times.  If I remember correctly he let me drive his 427 Chevelle on 82nd, I drove about a block and it was all I could handle.  We haven't seen him in many years. He was in our wedding in 1973 at Florence Oregon.  I remember he and Jamie drove to Florence in his Corvette roadster and ended up getting a speeding ticket on highway 101.  
He will be missed.

Uncle Dyrk was my favorite uncle. He lived with us for a time after he returned home from the army. We were young and he would play games with us, tease us, and always made us laugh. I wasn’t sure our garage would ever be the same-car parts everywhere. He could be serious and he could be goofy. He was easy going and easy to talk to.  He had a gentle spirit about him. He will be missed, and remembered fondly as Dyrkie Toes. I rest in knowing he is in the arms of our Savior and suffers no more. Prayers for peace and comfort to Jamie, DJ & Allison, Josh and all the grandkids. Love and hugs, Laura

I was so sad that we had to move to Florida away from our family and he gave me a car from his diecast car collection and left a note to give me reassurance that Florida would be a great place to live.
