After a brief struggle with cancer, Ed Minoggie passed away peacefully with his wife by his side. Ed was born on Sauvie Island to Louis P. Minoggie and Lillian Timm Minoggie. He lived in Portland and graduated from Lincoln High School and Oregon State College (now University).
After serving in the Merchant Marine during World War II, Ed worked at various jobs until 1949 when he met Tar Baby of Holly Hill, his first retriever. He spent the next 60 plus years of his life training and running dogs in Field Trials. Ed was instrumental in founding the Oregon Retriever Trial Club and the Professional Retriever Trial Association and served terms as president of both associations. Ed was very successful as a professional trainer and won over 159 Open stakes as well as turning more than 30 dogs into Field Champions. According to 1941-1995 Retriever Field Trial Statistics* by Susan E. Reynolds, Ed was ranked 26th among professionals with dogs in the finals at the National Open Field Trial. In 2009 Ed was the first Oregonian to be inducted into the Retriever Hall of Fame in Tennessee.
Ed was a long-time resident of Sauvie Island and loved the “country life”. He enjoyed his vegetable garden and was a Life Master at duplicate bridge. He felt blessed to have lived a long and happy life. His church and family were very important to him. Ed is survived by his wife, Ruth; his son, Charles (Sherry) of Vancouver, WA; his granddaughter, Carrie Estok (Bruce) of Seattle and grandson, Donn (Dena) of Nashville, TN; as well as great- grandchildren, Conner and Sophia Estok and David, Diana and Dylan Minoggie.
A celebration of Life will be held on Friday, August 17th, 2012, at Noon at the Sauvie Island Community Church. Private committal will be in Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Hospice of Washington County, 900 S.E. Oak Street, Ste. 202, Hillsboro, OR 97123 or to the Bird Dog Foundation, P.O. Box 774, College Station, TN 38039.
