Elbert Hill Sr.

Elbert Hill Sr. was born August 14, 1922, in Caddo Gap Arkansas. He was one of twelve children, seven boys and four girls, born to Durwood and Savanna (Crowe) Hill.

His parents instilled at an early age the faith and values he grew to embody his 99 years of life. Those who knew Elbert may attest to his commitment to leading a life exemplary of a God-fearing man. He loved reading the Bible, and if you spent enough time with him, he would be sure to share a word.

Elbert worked hard for his family whom he loved very much. He was accustomed to hard work having grown up on a farm where he helped to provide for the family. Although he did not have a formal education, seeing all he accomplished in life is a sign of his true knowledge and God’s blessing.

He enlisted in the Air Force in 1942 in Little Rock Arkansas and rose to the rank of Private 1st class during his service as a Heavy Equipment Truck Driver. He was honored with several awards while serving in World War II: the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Elbert married his loving wife of 58 years, Berthola (Bert) Jimmerson in 1944. He received an Honorable Discharge February 17th, 1946, at Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas. The same year they moved to Portland and settled into the house on Cleveland Avenue where they raised their three sons and created many fond memories

Elbert initially lived in Van Port, Oregon until the Historic Van Port Flood forced him to move into the Portland area. He worked many jobs, one of which was on the historic Grand Coulee Dam. He later hired on at Oregon Steel Foundry where he worked for over 20 years as a chipper.

All of Elbert’s life experiences shaped this family man and role model to the community. Family was the drive behind Elbert living so purposefully. He strived to show his sons the importance of doing what is right and always putting God first. Elbert and Berthola helped many families and friends in their time of need. He was a member of the Vancouver Avenue 1st Baptist Church for over 70 years, sang in the choir and was president of the male chorus. He was also a Prince Hall Mason, member of Enterprise Lodge #1 where he served as treasurer.

In his peaceful departure, Elbert is survived by his three sons: Elbert Jr, Darrell Erant & Marvin. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Tina Harris, Elbert Hill III, Kiara Hill, Latoya Hill and Terrence Hill, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Thurman Hill, one sister, Betty Turner-Harper, daughter in laws, Brenda Hill and Ruby Guy-Hill and a host of nieces and nephews.
