grandmother and friend who always had a smile passed away
Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021. She was 89.
Elizabeth was born to Eugene Schmitt and Josephine Nadeau Schmitt. She grew up in Northeast Portland and attended The Madeleine, Holy Child Academy, and Marylhurst College where she earned her education degree. She pursued her passion and taught in the Portland Public Schools. Elizabeth married Leonard L. Cebula in 1956. They raised four children.
Throughout her life she was always active in civic, educational and church organizations. Elizabeth initiated a strong volunteer program at The Grotto (The annual Christmas Festival of Lights, group tours, gift shop, to name a few) and dedicated her time and energy at The Grotto for over 30 years.
Elizabeth is survived by her children Michael F. (Cheryl), Philip E. (Sharon), Eileen M. (Earl) and John W. (Tanja); and five grandchildren, Daniel (Liliana), Ryan, Maria, Jake and Luke.
A funeral mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, September 16, 2021 in The Chapel of Mary at The Grotto, 8840 NE Skidmore Street, Portland OR 97220. (Main entrance is located at NE 85th Ave. and Sandy Blvd.) Masks are being required at The Grotto. Private Interment to follow.
