Elizabeth grew up in Omaha, and attended Union Chapel Elementary School in nearby Naples, Texas. She graduated from Bethlehem High School in Marietta, Texas, and went on to study at Prairie View Normal and Industrial College (now Prairie View A&M) to become a teacher.
She married Emanuel Warren in Marietta, Texas, on September 18, 1940. She accepted Christ at a very early age and was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost in 1943.
Elizabeth and Emanuel lived in Linden, Texas, where their first six children were born…. Ray, Elizabeth Ann, Gary, Jerry, Regena, and Wilbert. In 1956, Emanuel came to Portland, Oregon, to join other family members who had found good work here. Elizabeth and the children soon joined him, and their seventh child, Sandra, was born here in Portland.
Elizabeth remained very busy raising seven children, but found time to attend North Portland Bible College. She later worked for Portland Public Schools as a teacher’s aid, assisting students in reading, math, and spelling.
The family worshipped at Vancouver Avenue Baptist Church, but after many years there, Emanuel pastored Mt. Sinai Community Baptist Church where Elizabeth and Emanuel served together until his retirement from the church. During the Mt. Sinai years, Elizabeth served as President of the Rose City Ministers’ Wives Association, and also as Chair of the Ministers’ Wives Mission 2 of the District Association; she also served as State Youth Counselor of Portland, and was an adult Sunday School teacher at Mt. Sinai. For nine years, she was an instructor/leader for Bible Study Fellowship International.
For the last twenty-plus years, Elizabeth has worshipped at Maranatha Church, where she has been the leader of the Maranatha Women’s Ministry and for many of these years has also served as a Sunday School teacher.
Elizabeth also found time to volunteer as a teacher for the Junior Red Cross.
“Aunt Liz,” as she was known and loved by many family members and friends, was not only a faithful servant of the Lord, but was an incredible mother to her children, supporting them in all they did, shepherding them through school and college, activities, sports, and jobs! And it must be noted, she was the most wondrous cook on the planet! Many family members, church friends, and others would seek an invitation to Sunday dinners (and those invitations were joyfully handed out!), OR they would just happen to “drop by” on Sunday afternoons and take a place at the table, where everyone is considered family!
“Grandma Warren” was an inspiration to her grandchildren as well, and she loved and supported them in their life pursuits as youngsters and into adulthood. Going to Grandma’s was always a happy occasion, complete with many hugs and fantastic food!
Following a brief illness, Elizabeth was called home on November 30, 2015, at 11:40 PM, surrounded by all of her surviving children, several grandchildren, and other family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Emanuel Warren; son Ray; granddaughter Alecia Tennison; granddaughter Heather Rogers; grandson Jason Rogers; and great-grandson Angel Rogers. Elizabeth is survived by Daughter, Elizabeth Ann Bowens of Longview, TX, Gary W.( Maria) Warren of Eugene, OR, Jerry D (Margaret) Warren of Federal Way, WA, Regena S Warren of Portland, OR, Wilbert D (Lori) Warren of Beaverton, OR, Sandra K (Gary) Jackson of Portland, OR., 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
