Elva Poole Belcher, born January 21, 1920 in New Westminster BC, Canada. At an early age Elva moved to Portland, Oregon and attended and graduated from Jefferson High School. In 1942, Congress approved the creation of the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC). Shortly thereafter, Elva became the first African American woman from Oregon to be sworn into the WAAC. She was stationed in Fort Huachucca, Arizona and was one of 150,000 women who served in the WAAC and later, the Women Auxiliary Corps (WAC) during World War II. In 1944 she married and through that union they were blessed with three children. Elva had a long, successful career in the Medical industry. She was Medical Staff Secretary at Providence Hospital for many years and subsequently managed a medical office for a group of Neurologist. When she retired at age 65, Elva continued to utilize her talents by volunteering her time in support of the community Neighborhood Health Clinic. She received an award for outstanding volunteer service in 2000. In her spare time, Elva was an avid gardener and enjoyed reading a good book. More importantly, Elva was known for her wise counsel and support of those most in need. She was faithful in making regular contributions to her favorite charities and had a deep and abiding devotion to the Rosary. Elva is survived by her son William Belcher, daughters Andrea Belcher and Diane Tacker; sister Constance Cuie; four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and numerous cherished friends. We are comforted by many special memories and the time we spent with Elva. Remembrances may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Chapter of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
