Emma Catherine Place was born on Feb. 18, 1998 in Mount Vernon, Washington. She moved shortly after she was born; making a move to Windsor, CO. Emma loved her home in Colorado right next to the Poudre River, where she had room to explore with her sisters. The family moved to the city of Portland in 2007 which at first was a tough transition for a girl who needed room to roam. Yet, through key friendships at Laurelhurst Elementary School, and her church-family at First Covenant - Emma found a home and community here in Portland. Emma attended high school at St. Mary’s Academy where relationships deepened and broadened with both students and staff. Emma ran Cross Country with her sisters and was on the Nordic Ski Team. Emma served her school community as an ASB officer her senior year. After graduation, Emma attended Gonzaga University; looking to concentrate in Women’s and Gender Studies along with Political Science. At Gonzaga, Emma was also accepted into the Comprehensive Leadership Program. In the Summer of 2015 Emma represented the Evangelical Covenant Church with three other students to go to India to make a film for her denomination’s national youth conference - CHIC. Project Blue was to show the need to support and advocate for clean water for vulnerable people in the villages and slums of India. As part of this initiative, over a $150,000 was raised for clean water projects. One of Emma’s great loves was Cascades Camp in Yelm, WA where Emma attended for many years as a camper and then this last Summer in the role as, most appropriately, an Adventure Guide. Emma loved the outdoors where she could hike and ski and kayak. While her passing is far too soon for us all, she died doing what she loved in the company of one her best friends. She now has room to roam, by the hand of her Creator. In the words of C.S. Lewis, she is exploring ‘further up and further in’ - a new creation, prepared for her by the Father and His Son Jesus. Emma is survived by her parents, Kent and Janice, her three sisters, Erin, Laura and Abby - and a slew of aunts and uncles and cousins, grand-parents and countless loyal friends who delighted in our beautiful and loving girl.
