

Mrs. Crutchfield was born on May 31, 1930 in Portland, Oregon. She grew up in the Arbor Lodge neighborhood in North Portland, and attended Kenton Grade School. She graduated from Commerce (later Cleveland) High School in 1948. After attending two years at Oregon State University, she moved back to Portland where she worked as a secretary and stenographer for a local law firm. She married Alton R. Crutchfield on December 20, 1953, in St. Stephen's Cathedral. In 1954, she moved with her husband to Raymondville, Texas so he could teach school. In 1956, the couple moved back to Portland. She was a regular “room mother” for her three children, and was active in the local PTA. In 1980, she became the owner of a babysitting referral service, which she ran until 1998. She was an avid hiker, and made life-long friends with a lively group of men and women who hiked many of the trails in the Columbia River Gorge. She died in Gresham, Oregon on July 3. She was preceded in death by her husband and her son Mark. Surviving are children Wade and Laura, as well as six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 27 at 2pm at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 8705 E Burnside, in Portland.
