Florence Mary Williams, 96, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at Bridlemile Senior Care in Portland OR from congestive heart failure. Prior to moving to Portland in 2018, Florence had lived in Fort Collins CO for 33 years.
Florence Richert was born in Newton KS on November 29, 1924 to Karl and Helen (Claassen) Richert. She graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in math. During college, she took flying lessons and received her private license the summer of 1945.
On May 15, 1949, Florence married Blake Williams in Lawrence KS. They were married for 54 years, first living in Denver for 19 years, then moving to Newcastle WY, Prescott AZ, and finally Fort Collins.
Florence taught junior high math in Newcastle for four years and was a substitute teacher for several more years. She was a proficient pianist and organist, playing for church services as well as local musical productions. She was active in PEO, belonged to book clubs and bridge groups, and enjoyed golfing, swimming, walking, and lifting weights. While in Fort Collins, she volunteered at her church, a local elementary school, and a mailing group for charities.
Florence is survived by Bob Williams (son) and wife, Joanne, of Miami Springs FL, Mary Beth Ward (daughter) and husband, Joel, of Punta Gorda FL, Brant Williams (son) and wife, Lisa, of Portland OR, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Blake, her parents, one sister, Francis Johnson, and one brother, Robert Richert.
Family and friends will celebrate her life this fall in Fort Collins. There will be no formal service. Memorial contributions can be made directly to the American Heart Association or to any charity of choice.
Florence is in the care of Skyline Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
