Fred was born on October 8, 1924 in Aptos, CA to Lawrence and Fannie Hill – the second of seven children. In 1928 the family homesteaded on a new irrigation project near Williams, CA. The family grew, and gradually built the farm, through the Depression and War years. Fred worked on the farm, and with brother Raymond, greatly enjoyed the outdoor activities the area offered. Fred graduated from Williams High School and continued working in the local farming community for a few years. He often shared stories of when his grandparents, James and Ina Hill, met the Truth in Paso Robles and had a small convention on their farm in 1906. At age 13, Fred professed to serve God at Orick convention.
Fred moved to Portland, OR in 1946. He met Arlene Patchen on a horseback riding outing on Mt Scott, and they were married later that year. After a couple years, they purchased a home in SE Portland, where they raised their family of four children; then later moved to near mall 205. They considered it a great privilege to host a Sunday fellowship meeting for about 65 years. During their last years at Bonaventure and short time at the 8th Court ACH, they received gracious help and many visitors.
Fred loved the outdoors and spending time in Eastern Oregon … hunting, fishing, rock collecting, or just exploring. He was strongly committed to family, serving God, and encouraging the same in others. He had a wonderful life, with far greater treasures to look forward to.
Fred is survived by Arlene, his wife of nearly 80 years; their children Lowell (Judy) Hill of Pasco WA, Merle (Kathy) Hill of Gresham OR, Janelle (Dennis) Henderson of Wallowa OR, and Cheryl (Dan) Hall of Yakima WA; ten grandchildren , many great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, sister Luella Hansen, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Fannie, brothers Raymond, Lloyd and Richard, and sisters Marjorie Brand and Winnifred Davison.
