Dr. Frederic Warren Smith, Jr. 92, December 30, 1923, August 8, 2016. Dr. Smith received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Kansas State College where he was admitted to the Eta Kappa Nu Association honoring scholarship. He received the Doctor of Medicine degree from Cornell University Medical College and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He volunteered in WWII serving in the Army Signal Service Battalion in North Africa. During his career in Portland he was Chief of Gastroenterology at the Veterans Administration Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the Oregon Health and Sciences University, retiring as a Professor Emeritus. A kind and compassionate physician, a wise teacher, always a scholar and always a loving father and husband, Fred led life with thoughtful patience and humor. He died of what he called the "complications of being old". He is survived by his wife Mary his children Susan, Frederic and Matthew and his grandchildren Alan, Scott, Sarah, Enzo, Grimm, Frederic, Liam and Stuart. He requested that there be no Memorial Service. Later, in the fall, family and friends will together celebrate his life. Arrangements by Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary.
