

Gary grew up in Portland Oregon where he graduated from Franklin High School and Portland State University with a degree in business and minors in geology and history. He served in the Army from 1966 to 1972 reaching the rank of Sergeant and worked in purchasing for a number of companies, eventually retiring from Portland Community College as a purchasing agent.
Gary enjoyed many interests including history, architecture, opera and classical music. He was an avid reader and his other hobbies included model trains, stamp collecting, photography, bonsai trees and antiques.
Gary had an interest in politics where his involvement started with an active role in the 1964 presidential campaign. He enjoyed spending time on the Oregon coast and was involved with the U.S. Lighthouse Society. He was a fan of the Scottish Highland Games and Scottish music in particular.
Gary was a kind and generous person that always offered help to others. He was a kind and caring neighbor and his true joy was his family and friends.
Gary is survived by his son Chris Newkirk and Chris' fiancée Cara Ducey. He leaves behind his son, cousins, many god-children, and many dear friends.
A funeral service will be held at Lincoln Memorial Park on Friday May 19, 2023 at 2:45pm with a larger celebration of life at a later time still to be determined.
