Besides her wonderful photos, I remember Gayle's love for her dog and her bird and her funny stories about them. I saw her talk a bird out of a tree and onto her hand. She was fun to hike with and always interesting.
I have thought of you often, Gayle and missed you. Rest in peace.

I first met Gayle at Good Samaritan Hospital where I was working. She would have camera in hand and would be taking photos of Mt. Hood out one of the big windows from the cafeteria (when it was located in the Neurosciences Bldg.) She was so proud of all the Mazamma hikes she had led and would laugh about all the certificates she had to sign. :-) I know she had taken alot of photos in her time because she told me how she had donated her photo albums to some nearby nursing homes for others to enjoy. She had worked at Montgomery Wards for many years and lived not far from there. She would talk about her morning walk-abouts and the things she saw on them. One morning she found a little bird that looked dead. She held it in her hand and carried it in her pocket as she walked to her coffee place. I think she planned on giving it a proper burial since she had such a respect for nature. But as she neared the coffee place she felt the flutter of wings as the little  bird revived. She took her hand out of her pocket and was so surprised to see that the bird was not dead after all and very much alive as it flew away! I loved that story! She loved volunteering at Chapman School where the children called her "Miss Gayle" and would give her hugs. Whenever she saw an abandoned lunch box or coat she would wash it up and put it in lost-and-found. She had the greatest smile and playful spirit. I treasure a photo she gave me of herself standing next to a tree she had nicknamed George. This tree has growths in the bark that make it look like it has an eye, nose and mouth. There she is, smiling, wearing her familiar little hat and a pretty jacket in shades of blue. I lost touch with her when she moved to be with family, which would have been a couple years now. I am so glad to have made Gayle's acquaintance. I will think of her when I am in nature  because I know her spirit would choose to reside  there. My condolences to her family. She was a treasure.

Oh,Gayle,all the hikes we've had together over all those years and all those great photos you've taken! I cherish each and every one of my many happy memories of you! Love to you always, until we meet again!
