George Alberdt

George Alberdt died June 6, 2011, in Portland, Oregon at age 93. A Celebration of George’s life will be held June 17, 2011, from 2 to 4 PM at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, 2220 NE Marine Drive, Portland, Oregon, 97211.

A lifelong Portland resident, George was born to Conrad and Katie Ruppe Alberdt at Good Samaritan Hospital on November 23, 1917. He always thanked his parents for his ability to speak fluent German. George attended Hosford Grade School and Washington High School, followed by Northwestern Business School in Portland and the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon. His love of sports began in high school where he was an outstanding baseball pitcher and outfielder, and continued through college and a few years of professional play.

George served in the U. S. Army, 28th Infantry Division, during World War II for four and one half years, rising to the rank of Company First Sergeant. He took part in the D Day invasion of Europe, earning one bronze star and two purple hearts.

George was employed by Standard Brands, Inc., retiring after 40 years as Northwest Regional Manager, and receiving the Quarter Century Club’s Certificate of Long Service. George served as a model within the company for long term customer loyalty and considered his customers to be lifelong friends.

George is survived by his wife, Marylou Wittenberg Alberdt, and son George Gary Alberdt of Carlsbad, California. He was predeceased by his brother, Conrad Jr., who died at age 7, and by his first wife, Lillian Reed Alberdt who died in 1966.

A gregarious and genuine believer in the goodness of people, George was a life member of the Elks, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and Al Kader Shriners. He was a member of Rotary, the Multnomah Athletic Club, Oregon Senior Golf Association, and Columbia Edgewater Country Club, where his warm smile will be missed by all.
