Born to a farming family in rural India in 1937, Krishnamurthy led an extraordinary life. He was educated in a one room school in Karnataka state and became the first in his family to graduate from college, later becoming a doctor and immigrating to the U.S. After arriving to Niagara Falls in 1966, he moved to Long Beach, California where he completed his residency in Internal Medicine. He specialized in Nuclear Medicine at UCLA.
Introduced to Shakuntala Naik by letter, they corresponded for two years before marrying in 1969 and settling in Los Angeles, CA. In 1977, Krishnamurthy and his wife moved with their son Anil and daughter Kalpana to Portland. Krishnamurthy served as the Chief of Nuclear Medicine at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital of Portland for 25 years. He was a leading expert in medical research about liver function, specifically hepatobiliary imagining. Over his career, he co-authored more than 115 articles, over 100 abstracts, and presented at medical conferences around the world. After retiring from the VA, he worked for a decade with his wife Shakuntala at Tuality Community Hospital. He retired from medicine in 2011.
Krishnamurthy was a founder of the Indian American Medical Association, which was active from 1998-2004. He was active in Beaverton Rotary for over twenty years and loved politics and current events.
He is preceded in death by his father Thimmegowda and his mother Manjamma Gowda. His death follows those of his brothers GT Dharmaiah, GT Siddappa, GT Narayan, and GT Sadashiva and his sister Sheshamma. His remaining sibling Kousalya lives in India. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years Dr. Shakuntala Krishnamurthy, his son Anil Raj Krishnamurthy, daughter Kalpana Krishnamurthy and son-in-law Thomas Wheatley. In recent years, his greatest joy came from his grandsons Sachin and Kavi.
